Right im just gonna get to the point, a little while ago im fairly certain that someone at Fdev was heard to say that when the Thargoids do get here then we would be presented with an option, a crossroads if you will. That those very first Cmdrs' action will determine our future relations with these beings.
I understand that some of the community are more than happy to go around blasting these things away into caustic dust, sure, its fun to go up against a new type of enemy, one that fulfills that pew pew craving they desire.
And thats all good for them...but for the rest of us, where do we fit in?
There are some out there that do not want to engage in combat. I killed my first and only Thargoid last night and I felt dirty doing it, its "scream" as it blew up made me feel uneasy, yes yes i know its just a game but as with all things in life there are consequences....or at least I wonder if that is the case...??
Currently there seems to be heavy influence for the combat initiative. I was hoping that there would be two different stances on approaching the thargoid storyline...namely combat and scientific.
We currently have access to the missiles for combat and we have the research limpets and xeno-scanner for science. But I personally think that the xeno-scanner is more aligned for combat given that it enables us to see its health and assist us in knowing when it will die. This does not seem to offer anything else of scientific value. The only other thing that comes close to a sciencey tool is the research limpet, but I fear that this is merely another tool for extracting CG items/resources and would not herald any other ability.
My worry is that we are being funneled into war. As it stands there are far more tools available to us for a combat stance than there are to a scientific understanding and/or communication.
Next on the CG list is a blueprint for a new type of anti-thargoid canon. Yet more pew pew against an "enemy" that we know nothing about, their intentions, wants, needs etc. We are being constantly told via Galnet that these aliens ARE the enemy and that they must be defended against, but like I said earlier, I felt dirty killing one.
Why?
Because they have never opened fire on me. Yes I have seen the vids on youtube of people being hyperdicted and fire upon with no provocation but these instances are very rare I believe and are not representative of the thargoid "community" as a whole. The unprovoked attacks are a very minute percentage in my eyes.
So...the question remains...will there be any hope of a peaceful communication in the near future or are we all resigned to a life of war against an "enemy" that some do not believe them to be?
Will the scientific community be given the tools we desire in order to effectively carry out numerous tests so we might better understand that which we do not know? Or will we be fed more propaganda and weapons thrust under our noses that we ultimately have no option but to pick up said weapons and follow into the darkness with guns drawn and eyes wide shut?
Or what if in time, we will be able to carry out these tests, should we hold fire until more is known? If we kill are we then labelled by them as an enemy for all time and thus negate any further chance of a peaceful relation? Or is there a chance for redemption?
I personally would like more tools to further our understanding. Maybe even a way to communicate with them. I was a little disheartened when, after honking the discovery scanner that they didnt respond with a "honk" of their own. Flashing our ship lights garners no response either.
I cant be the only one who thinks this way.
To finish off with...I would just like to say that this is by no means a moan about 2.4...this is the best thing to happen to the game in my opinion. Fdev have done an amazing job with everything from sound design, graphics, design etc and i will never be able to put this down now.
So much is unknown at the moment and who knows what is in store for us. Naturally people will express their concerns, worries, thoughts and hopes...this is all i am doing.
I know this was a long read and if youve made it this far I thank you for your time, please feel free to respond in kind with your thoughts below. I look forward to reading them.
