Short Version: Powerplay doesn't cut it, think "fate of humanity!"
Hello Devs, please understand I am coming from a perspective of very much enjoying the game from a mechanics and realism standpoint, but what the game lacks is a story that inspires interest!
I understand the game is a sandbox space exploration game and in way the player is meant to be able to make their own story, and then on top of that there is powerplay, but I just have to say that the current depth of story/background just does not cut it. There are competing games out there that have hardly as much in terms of technical depth but far more story, and people play those games just to find out what happens.
I will mention one very good example, a mobile game called "Out There" in which it is a space exploration / resource management game with random events. The gameplay mechanics are SIMPLE and yet the game is enthralling because it has an EXCELLENT story! That alone makes you want to keep playing!
So lets look at the game's history, it has relied on crowd-sourced funding and community ideas since inception and thus my recommendation is to do what ED has always done and CROWD SOURCE a good storyline! This allows people's voices to be heard, vote on what makes sense, and implement something that most (not everyone) can agree on. The setting is already the Milky Way Galaxy, so we already have a good starting point on something that is real and relate-able to us earthlings.
I will make my one put...if I can suggest a type of story, it is one that puts the fate of humanity as a whole in question, and playing through the game allows you to uncover more and more of the story. It may sound cliche but just look at the games that do it well and how successful they are (you probably know more than I do):
StarCraft - watch the cinematics for this game on youtube and you'll know what I'm talking about
Homeworld - excellent story
Out There - as stated previously
X Series - good but more of a "meh"
Halo - also excellent story
If I am missing something or this conversation has already been dealt with in detail, please refer me to that thread!!
