Ctl-Alt-Del Save of Elite Dangerous

As a VR player, I so love this game, and oh how much sometimes I hate it when something like this occurs, but hey, can't stop playing. In the 1960's, I played in a cardboard box with drawn controls to "fantasize" my space travels. Elite Dangerous Odyssey is my dream come true. I love it, though I hate the FDev VR negligence it gets, but it still is awesome.

I'm in one of my "fighting" ships and go on a Massacre mission and took out two pirates, but needed five, so jump to Super-Cruise to track them down again. I have had the "problem" where you could not enter super cruise several times, you just had to log out and log back in. But tonight, oh my goodness. Same issue, could not Super Cruise, but now I could not log out either. My "exit/pause" button would not work. Keyboard escape would not work. XBox controller would not work. So I took off my VR headset and used my mouse on the mirror window close "X" in upper right corner and the window does not close, rather I hear "shields down". What?!?! Put VR headset back on and I hear my ship computer saying "critical temperature" and I see flames on my dashboard. Things are heating up, modules are going off line, I'm in deep trouble. I can't do anything, I can't log out, I just sit in my cockpit as hull damage increases and flames appear in my cockpit. I'm human, I'm panicking.

Finally, in desperation, I rip off my VR headset and use the Windows Ctl-Alt-Del to get task manager and select, "KILL THIS PROGRAM". Well, actually "end program", but you know how I felt. It worked. Finally EDO closed down. I restarted EDO with concern, but discovered I'm in the same location and my shields and hull are at a 100%, as if nothing really happened previously. I went into Super Cruise, which now worked just fine, and had to repeat the Nav Beacon, continuing the mission to success.

Whew, what a freaking scare. I only have 650 hours in this game, and plan to have many more if it continues to be supported. Love it, warts and all. But geez, things can get really weird with this thing.

Your client lost it's connection with the server (probably the transaction server). That's why you couldn't jump anywhere, even getting an acknowledgment that you're at the menu and wanting to shut down is a transaction.

However, because your client hadn't actually contacted the servers for a while it also never communicated the fact that your ship was burning up and taking damage. So you restarted at the last point where the server knew you were.

It's a weird situation. Modern gaming. 🤷‍♂️

No harm no foul, but it sure was stressful. I'm not sure why closing the client window would result in a "shields down" command with no window closure and kick off a slow self destruction scenario. I've had this disconnect issue before several times where I couldn't enter SC, but nothing this drastic. I guess after the disconnect it really doesn't matter what happens, so next time I won't panic, just kill it anyway I can and sign back in.

Using VR, you are actually in the cockpit and things feel so much more immersive, which can lead to panic attacks when things like this occur :)
