CTRL + B

I watched a Rinzler vid and he mentioned CTRL + B to monitor the bandwidth (whatever bandwidth means). It seems the higher it is, the more CMDRs are in your instance.

I'm just wondering, what is a high bandwidth? I am currently in Obsidian Orbital in Maia having flown in an hour or so ago - no other CMDRs to be seen, but I wasn't watching the bandwidth. As I sit in the Station about to launch, it is currently fluctuating between 0 and 89 ish, with occasional spikes up to 153 ish.

Just wondering what is normal/busy/lethal?

Hibachi.

0-153B is nothing. CMDRs are usually indicated by 1,000KB and above (generally). It depends on your connection, but in busy instances mine goes up to 25-30KB/s.

I consider CTRL-B to be "long range player radar".

Edit: Keep in mind, that is total bandwidth. When you load the mission board, you will see it spike even in Solo. High bandwidth doesn't always indicate CMDR presence. However, consistently high BW in an instance generally does indicate CMDR presence, even when you can't see him on radar.

@ForeverNoob is entirely correct but of course this is to a large extent superseded by the 'Contact' Tab in the 2 panel now, following ED 2.3.

Basically if am sitting in supercruise waiting to interdict I will still use Ctrl-B just in case but I will be sitting with the 2 panel open on 'Contact'.

However, where Ctrl-B is still highly relevant is when jumping to a new system or dropping to normal space, such as to a space station or RES. Ctrl-B will tell you whether other Cmdrs will be present before you arrive.
