Cufflinks - at last!

3D modelling is not one of my strong points - anyone have any pointers on how to get started/good tutorials/software to use?

I'm quite keen to pick up a Maker-Bot sometime this year, but I guess I'd better learn how to model something first (and I guess I could use Shapeways to print it meantime).

Quite neat - I particularly like this one as it reminds me of a Borg ship :)
Everyone says that! But yes, it is very Borgy.

love some of the models though tiny i like and at a price i would expect to pay, makes you think how much of a mark up the Official Elite models have.

It will depend a lot on if the ships are hollowed out before printing. Shapeways at least charges by volume of the material used, so hollowing can make a huge difference in price. Also most of my stuff is "networky", which keeps the costs down, but you have to have solid surfaces for a ship.

The first thing would be to decide on which kind of software to use. Blender is the big open source modelling tool, and it's very powerful. However, it also shows its open-sourceness in it's UI which has something of a steep learning curve. There's also SketchUp, which was being developed by Google, although I think it might have been sold to someone else now. It's supposed to be pretty good. I use Rhino, which isn't free, although it is a lot cheaper than things like Maya and 3DS Max (which are the standards for 3D content in films). I think most of the expensive commercial programs have free trial periods though.

Very nice. I've been interested by the idea of 3D printing for a while so I'll have to check that site out.

To be honest they don't look that great and they are very expensive for what your getting.

I paid £15 this week for a set of Rhodium/Silver alloy with gold enamel dalek cufflinks with a very fine detailing, including the bumps, eyestalk, gun and plunger with a proper cufflink mechanism.

I wouldn't have expected these to be almost twice the price and a fraction of the resolution.

Yeah but Cobra Mk III > Daleks ;)

Mr Nation's (may Blake rest his soul) finest are a little passée now

(tongue firmly in cheek btw - for the avoidance of doubt)

What are you 9 years old?

"Cobra's > Daleks" I expect that so called LEET speak on WoW or CoD not supposedly Elite.

BUT it doesn't matter what the content is the point is that those cobras are low quality, poorly made, seriously overpriced, tat.

I have had custom made solid silver cufflinks made for less than those.

Oh well there is no accounting for taste it seems.

Obviously the fact that Slopey used a winking smiley in his comment, was completely lost on you.

Sigh. Please go and research the concept of smilies. And I even spelt it out for you just so you would have maybe realised I was joking.

Couldn't have made it any more obvious I'm afraid.

(A "greater than" boolean operator isn't LEET speak fwiw. And you don't need the greengrocer's apostrophe on plurals. In case you're wondering, it's a singular greengrocer in my previous sentence).

Great cufflinks!! With the normal choice of contemporary cufflinks, this new arrival will haunt the men's crowd for its fad and classiness. A good one to go with!!!

Nice, it would be cool if Frontier could make some Elite ranking Medals to. I think they would sell good. Bronze for dangerous, silver for deadly and shiny gold for the Elite class. And have smaller medals for the lesser ranks. Like ribbons. Then you could buy those as you progress in rank. Good idea or?
