Cuirosity killed the cat

so I am currently 3.75Ly away from a neighboring system, moving at 1,600c and climbing. I did this by just leaving it pointed at a star that was 3.79 away and going to get food before making an H-jump. Suddenly I find myself wondering how the game might handle someone getting curious enough, bored enough, or outright patient enough to fly all the way across the 3.79Ly without an H-jump... Will the ship blow up(or other invisible wall), auto h-jump at some point, or treat it like a really slow loading screen for the distant system to hide the transition from one system to another?

Perhaps I will try myself as we speak, though I'll probably miss the moment I get an answer.

Check the Alpha/early beta forum archives. That's the kind of things we got up to back then. I believe we could go the distance but wouldn't actually get there, so to speak. Maybe it is different now? Only one way to find out!

:D S

It can't be done, it has been tried and proved not to work. The pixels don't like it; the jump is required.

Jump is a hidden loading screen to put you in the next system instance. Without it the distance just goes to 0 and nothing appears since nothing is loading.

It would also make permit systems completely pointless. Kudos for trying but don't expect the fuel rats to bail you out when you have 20 seconds of oxygen at 4Ly away from the star :D

Yup as they said it was done. Back in beta the bubble we could be in was right next to but did not include Sol because the devs hadn't finished making it yet. But being the persistent....stubborn?...folks we were, we tried to get to it anyways but without an H-jump it wont load the next system.

Pff, I was down to 18 hours when I made the jump anyways and based on prior experience had -more- than enough fuel to fly for 18 hours! Asp's with all excess systems switched off can go for a really long time. A permit system however may be guarded, meaning that attempting to get there by such a method would get you into a tough fight. Success in that fight could grant you a -very- hefty fine, but also a hard won access to that system. Blockade running, so to speak. I don't really think that would detract from the game, just add one more interesting thing you could do for fun and make for some really hard core smuggling missions... More interesting than smuggling by dodging a scan or two at least.
