Curious - Your reaction to Cmdr Tony Curtis' Videos?

Was watching some ED videos on YouTube yesterday.

Came across a raft of Cmdr Tony Curtis videos. Although he has clearly put a lot of effort into making them and they're amusing, I couldn't see the point. I mean, why deliberately cast yourself in such a bad light? Anyway, left me wondering what other players' thought of the videos? Bear in mind this is NOT a name and shame thread. You may like the videos, or the gameplay they portray, and that's fine. Perhaps he's a role model. Then again, you may not like them at all. Also valid.

Whatever you opinion, just keep it nice and mature. I'm more interested how others interpret the motive for the videos, rather than the gameplay as I (and you) do want yet another emotional thread about griefing. :)

And you feel this is therefore grounds to expound on this totally not calling someone out because hey even though there's a lot of effort, surely it's just not even worth it? But we'll call them out anyway in the topic. Clearly it is. Because you'd not have raised a thread, if it wasn't.

But of course, what we really do need just a lot more of, is debates about people doing things in elite that may or may not be the same as someone else and let's have some feelings about that. I'm sure he'll be chuffed he got a reaction. That's the intent. Mission accomplished. ;)

Yep. He publishes under that name and I can't imagine how you would find the videos otherwise. Rather than criticise me, go have a look at the videos and then express an opinion that's your own. You don't need to speak for him or other forum users.

Can't really see how commenting on published video's related to ED might be considered "naming & shaming".
If Yamiks or Obsidian Ant posts up a video and I wanted to be critical of it, I'd hope the mod's here wouldn't consider criticism as "naming & shaming".

Personally, I was never a fan of things like "Game for a Laugh" or, more recently, "Jackass" and the same applies to similar video's related to ED.
To me, it's just somebody acting like a tool.

My opinion

Kofeyh is a valued member of the Elite Dangerous streaming community and has several encounters with content creators. Her years of experience in the community makes her opinion quite valid.

I am also a member of the Elite Dangerous streaming community and I have gone from being a victim of Tony to a admirer of his work and currently run in his wing.

Many see the griefing or salt mining as a means to negatively affect the community. I however see it differently. As a streamer being sniped is his way to welcome new streamers into the community, it is also a way to measure the constitution of the streamer to see if they can handle the cutthroat origins of open play. Regardless of the outcome he always brings with him a ton of viewers to the streamers channel thus promoting them more and he always highlights them in his videos. I myself was just highlighted in the last one. People find the salt and the combat amusing in an otherwise Background simulated game. So in my opinion they are great videos that support a community as well as adding a needed infamous flare.

Welcome to the community CMDR o7

I've watched almost all of them. I'm not sure how that actually, fundamentally changes the game, though? That also doesn't explain why you've taken so very much interest in something you "don't see the point in". ;)

I'm not sure what your point is. It's someone playing elite; potentially differently to someone else. I'm not criticising you, I'm trying to understand whether you are in fact actually very interested in it, enough to kick off yet another "someone is playing the game differently and so I have some opinions on that" thread we've seen quite a few times now.

My 'opinion' is that it's someone else playing elite, and doing their thing. And apparently enjoying it. It might not be my thing, but that's not really relevant, is it. My opinion isn't "someone did something on the internet so I must ask my chums on the forums to have some feelings about it".

I'm not being nasty; I'm probably just desensitised to all the "someone did something in the game, question mark exclamation point" threads of late. Yes. Other people also play elite. You could be forgiven for thinking this is an utter revelation for some.

I watch videos which either interest or amuse me. Zarek Null, Yamiks, Ghost Giraffe - they amuse me. Obsidian Ant is interesting. Watch Isinona fly and roleplay is great.

Tony Curtis.... watched the odd vid, can't say they do much for me. Seems too much like attention seeking.

Not for me. Not how I play and not something I find entertaining to watch if i'm honest. Any more than that would be unfair of me to say as it's mostly personal preference of the content speaking than quality/video making/style.

I mean, why deliberately cast yourself in such a bad light?

provocation is a pretty common way to get attention, on youtube it's usually for money, ego or to get some message across. it can get very cheap.

a good friend of mine is a very successful youtuber. in a few years he has already earned more than me in a lifetime as a sw developer. he is a smart an hearty guy and his show is deliberate utter adolescent crap, i can't even watch it, but the crappier it is the more money he makes, literally.

no idea in this case, i usually don't bite but sounds familiar, isn't this the stream sniper? i watched it once it was linked here. it could be seen as a social critique of the senseless voyeurist culture flourishing on the net ... but somehow i doubt it! looks like he's after his own piece of the cake.

what should i know, i'm too old for this. maybe you could be more selective about the content crap you watch?

He cares enough to put a lot of effort into his videos. So long as it is legal, who cares what his motive is? Why is this even a question? What is the point of this post if it isn't supposed to be a "name and shame"? Why do you care?
