What are the perks in playing OPEN vs. SOLO?
as long as you have something to lose (=while progressing to an combat conda): nothing
as soon you have a combat conda and cant spend your money anywhere anymore: take your fdl and kill every player you see just for the lulz

for everything other there is group play. open is just for psychos and sheep who like to get slaughtered ;D

If you like to play against people then play open, if you like to play with people then play Mobius, if you don't then play solo

I've no idea why there is so much fear about open. I've had nothing but positive experiences and those I've met have been happy to work together. No problems at all in months of play.

I've been playing open for ages - but, it's been in a relatively low-population area of space.

Recently upgraded to a Viper and went to Leesti to do some bounty hunting at a res. I found a place that was very active. Lots of high-bounty pirates, lots of system security, and a couple of other players. One in a vulture, another in e Fer-de-lance.

Then the guy in the Fer-de-lance started ramming me. First one I thought was an accident. I realized the second one was intentional. I tried dodging the third but failed. At that point I had no shields and 26% hull, so I figured I'd boost out of there and get into super-cruise.

As I was charging up to super-cruise, the Fer-de-lance decided to open fire and finish me off before I could flee.

So yeah. That's my first experience sharing combat space with other players.

I have therefore swapped to Solo.

What he means is.

If you like play with people and have the potential to play PVP if you so desire then play open. If you want to play Eurotrucker Space Version 1.1.0 in a convoy, play Mobius, of you like drive you truck solo then solo...

No reason to be snide. Save that for dangerous discussions, not newcomers.
I answered the Op question in a meaningful and non judgemental way. Play the game how you wish.

Then you should have said that if you like to play with people, play group. Let him make up his own mind about which group.
.
I started in Solo and got fed up to the back teeth of NPCs tring to take me out all the time. Best advice is get out of the starting system as soon as possible and stay away from systems in civil war unless you are playing for the combat. As a NCP (Non-Combat Pilot) I just wanted to be left alone to trade to a point where I was able to kit out a vessel for exploration, so I traded in solo until I got to that, then I went open play.
.
Since I have done that, I have been bothered a lot less in 'civilised space' by NPCs, and have never been bothered by a player. So for me, Open is a much better way of playing, and you DON'T have to like playing AGAINST people to enjoy Open!

Open can be frustrating and infuriating but most of the time this risk spices things up, gives it an edge that simply isn't there in Solo or Group. Having said that I have used Group mode when I have made a rash purchase and have only minimal cash available. I don't see why I'd risk my career earnings in open...

Really not had that much trouble in Open either, but then I generally stay away from the core systems. Even there I have only really been pirated a couple of times by well role played pirates, it was a pain but you get over it.

Nobody mentioned Wings yet?

If you wing up OP you get bonuses to trade and exploration profits. Combat profits are shared, but it means you can take targets down quicker, and RES are meant to spawn more ships for people in Wings to compensate.

There is something very nice about playing open and seeing no-one for weeks then suddenly and quite unexpectedly bumping into someone in the middle of nowhere.
