Curse you, FD! Suddenly, my ship is too small again!

So, my primary exploration vessel (for one account) has always been the DBX. Last year, I appreciated the buff that gave us an extra module slot that allowed me to have some cargo while I explored. I always felt guilty about leaving behind this or that escape-pod thousands of light-years away from known space. ;) This year, I'm appreciating the extra slot freed up by the newly integrated discovery scanner that is now allocated to a Guardian FSD booster.

But, now, with the new exploration mechanic, not only am I scanning terrestrials and moonlets, but rings as well. Suddenly, I'm finding hot-spots full of void opals and low-temperature diamonds and lamenting the fact that I don't have enough space for a refinery and extra cargo.

Oh well, I'll probably fly my other commander out there -- who is allowed to fly other ships -- and reap the rewards that way, but...

Suddenly, my DBX is smaller again. Damn, FD. Damn you!

"We're gonna need a bigger boat"....

This was why im toying with the idea of an explorer phantom, plenty of space for the gadgets and a nice jump range to boot.

CMDR....the last thing you need is a belly full of void opals when you're casually scanning systems because those naughty NPCs can smell them at 15,000LY.

Stay lean out there and then come back with a monter ship and a few friends.

Yeah just done a 20 kylie trip in a Phantom - got 41 LY jump range with just FSD engineering and a few "undersiszed" modules, so with guardian stuff and a bit of effort you could obv get much better.

As Hacker says though, you don't really want cargo because as soon as you're back in the bubble you become an interdiction magent, sure it's easy enough to win but it's hassle. Have to admit though that I spotted a few void opal hotspots and the like when I was out, and kinda wished I'd brought mining gear, but it's probably best to keep the two activities separate...

Never mind the cargo - with there being so many surface POI with loads of raw mats I find that I fill up on one (like Niobium) and would really like a mat trader to move things around - not often come across when out in the black :)

I have a Krait Phantom that is Miner/Explorer build. Not that it is efficient in both proficies, but it is a lot of fun to blow up a rock in deep space from time to time :) - and with all the bang boom stuff it still does 50 lightyears per jump. A real fun ship.

Greed is what gets you killed in the end. Pretty much all the time. Like when I lost my corvette last week. It was greed that tempted me to hunt that group of 4 measly pirates.

Stay safe cmdr, don't get greedy, bookmark and come back with a better suited ship!

Oh yea, I fully expect, after being out in the Big Dark for some time, to come back to the Bubble and almost immediately get the "The rumors are true!" message.

Yea, like I was out there talking to anyone! :D

Isn't that part of the challenge of the game, though? And that's why my DBX won't be doing it. It will become a task for either my Krait, Python or maybe even Corvette.

when i started to read the op, i though he would talk about the need for the research limpets and cargo... but then refinery ??
why would you go mining void opals out in the black, when there are lots of deposits within jumprange of stations...

I wasn't worried about research limpets because I thought they were only for Thargoids and there's no way in hell I'm gonna mess with them in the Deep Black. :) Of course, you made me research that further and I realize now their use has been expanded. Unfortunately, I have as yet to encounter any of the new items out in the Void.

Because I can? :) Mind you, were I to do it, I'd be marking all the locations I find and only when I'm returning to Known Space might I mine them. Also, where I am now, there is in fact a station only a few jumps away.

Of course it is, but I'm not a fan of the 'Conda; I only mentioned the Corvette because I have one. I prefer medium to small ships, so it'll likely be the Python or the Krait when I do it.

Just remember a shorter jump range just mean you can have your Cargo hold and you can get more scanned systems. So is there a con not using Guardian FSD booster?

I always disliked big ships for exploration, but with the mining changes I might have a reason to outfit my Conda for really long jumps and equip it with mining stuff... Deep space miner is a valid occupation now... :D

Just need enough cargo to make it worth your while...
