custom binds problem (I promise i used search)

just getting back into the game and downloaded it again todight and cant get a custom bind to appear in the controls drop down.

i've read the sticky thread and followed the steps but i'm clearly going wrong as i still cant figure out why the bindings dont appear in the drop down.

so here's what i did:

downloaded an xml file and have renamed both the file and line 2 in the xml to "customnoj"
my xml file looks like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<Root PresetName="Customnoj" MajorVersion="3" MinorVersion="0">

i saved this to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings\ which now has two files in there. 1 called startpreset and one called "customnoj.3.0.binds"
i loaded the game and the only the default thrustmaster x was visible in the control menu. so i then went and edited startpreset and replaced "thrustmastertflighthotas" with "customernoj" and saved the file. Checked and still nothing, and when i look against at the startpreset file its reverted back.

I'm obviously missing something but cannot figure it out (and i promise i've done a lot of google searching). What am i getting wrong?

Cheers all.

Is it "StartPreset.start" ?

Edit: Actually I just looked at mine, did you edit its content too? I have its content as "customnoj" on four consecutive lines (as Odyssey has four control sets) which works for EDH too.

Hi @Cmdr Linxe ,

The profile won't be shown as a choice in game if there are binds to a controller defined within the bind file that ED does not recognize.
If this is the case, an error file is written to the binds folder when the game loads which will call out the controllers that could not be found.

One way to check what ED is seeing as a controller, is to just use the default joystick profile...customise something...anything...using the joysticks switches (ie trigger), apply then exit the game.
You should see a "custom" bind file.
When you open this with notepad and scroll to the bind you customised, you'll see the controller name that ED has recognised.

Hope this helps.

if using odyssey which is now version 4.0 try adding 4.0 to the filename (soz itsa old post now) so Customnoj 4.0.binds
version 3.0 is for horizons only
try renaming the startpreset.start too as per sticky step 3 when the file open and editing in notepad to just
Customnoj (with no numbers or symbols " ect)
else make a bacup first to desktop and then experiment using the default nb method and name that something like mytestbinds.4.0
when done just slot your old binding folder back in place and delete the test version of the binding folder
do not run the game when working with the files close it down and restart when done

thanks for the help. it looks like the problem i had was that the files were still showing as xml files and not .binds
i did what Clicker suggested and edited a command and that then let me edit a custom file correctly.....then I went back to my old pc and grabbed the binds file and dumped it in and thats got it working.
