Custom built ships

I could see this being a thing in a game like ED. Customized, modular ships built to order at certain specialized shipyards for that purpose, similar to Engineers dock.

Custom ships would be something 4 times as expensive as a comparable ship in its class, and no insurance -- if you lose it, because it's a custom job, there's no handy replacements to quickly slip you into, you're fronting the entire cost of a new one or enjoy your Sidewinder.

For the same reason there would be timers factored into both construction and reconstruction. The bigger and more expensive the ship the more it cost and the more time it took to build, up to several weeks at the high end.

You pick the internal bays, with everything balanced mostly by cost in credits your limits are price and the fact that if you build a ship so massive its core power plant can't power it or no thrusters exist that are strong enough to move it or the FSD range is 0.8 LY, sucks to be you, you're still paying the shipyard for your useless custom ship.

I could see it being tough to implement, but I could also see it being a fun and interesting way to spice up the game towards the last couple years of its expected life cycle. I think there'd be ways to do it that would be balanced, interesting and fun and create a massive money sink for people with too many credits to enjoy the credit earning side of the game anymore.

Thoughts?

Honestly? For my next trick, watch me fly around the room under my own power.

It looks good on paper, and sounds like a dream in our heads, but you do realize the ships we're currently seeing in this game are just a modernized version of the ships that were first introduced in 1984.

Can you see them expanding the ship line exponentially given how long it's taking them to add the Type 10 to the current line of ships? How long did it take them to add the Dolphin?

When do you think we'll even be seeing the speculated ships on the wiki? Ever?

This is a forum for suggestions. Cynicism disguised as pragmatism is not the purpose of the Forum. Pie-in-the-sky ideas are why we are in this sub Forum in the first place. Stating that a pie-in-the-sky idea is Impractical is stating nothing.

This is also a place for users to remind users that sometimes those pie-in-the-sky ideas, no matter how good, can be shot down by even the most pragmatic. If you don't think so, look around and you'll see quite clearly other users explaining to you -- in excruciating and painstaking pragmatism -- how it's not going to be considered.

I chose the easy path. I could've easily chosen the developer path and explain that while it sounds good, it's not going to happen because you're looking at adding programming and storage space that requires to be done for each and every player to keep track of all these unique designs. As this game is a distributed network model, you're looking at MB to GB more storage space being taken up on your PC in order to create a buffer for if it happens, track this information and it will be pushing updates on a daily basis when new ships have been added to this model.

I could also choose the programmer's response of: No, can't be done.

Take your choice which answer you want to hear.

I don't believe in the word "can't." In my dictionary it's a synonym of "won't."

*Chuckling* Good for you for never dealing with programmers. I have. It's even more amusing if they don't want to listen to you anymore as you're pitching the same idea at them. They will walk away without a second thought.

The thing is though, for all their troglodyte responses, when they say can't, they mean can't. You don't always know what they've worked on, what they're working on and whether or not your idea can fit in between the former and the latter.

It takes a lot of coaxing and discussing -- on their level -- when they say "can't.."

Don't hate too much. MBaldelli only likes ideas that involve staring at spreadsheets, sabotaging the game, and anything that adds spontaneous team based death-matches of Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

HA! I'm many things, but I've never been an Eve Online player. Though you're onto something. RNG in the right doses can be fun. RNG in order to drive the game forward is most certainly not fun.

So...we're good with an FDL with 80 internal slots for HRPs and MRPs "because I only need to be restricted by credits and power".

What could possibly go wrong? :)
