Custom controls config disappear on Updates

Often when there's an update my custom control config disappears.

This means endless fiddling around putting it back in place.

This time I've just lost my ship by scraping it along the inside of the space station because I'd not configured the joystick correctly.

This is really ticking me off :(

If you're manually reconfiguring games files, yes, they will be reset on update.

Backup the file and then drop it back in to the directory after you've patched.

If you were losing settings that had been configured through the UI then fair enough but you can't expect them to support custom config.

Set up your controls in ED, then go to C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings and make a copy of the custom.binds file and put it somewhere safe (rename it if you want, it will show up in the control config with whatever name you choose).

Maybe something I could put in EDConfig (see my sig)... a Backup/Restore function for key bindings

But this did never happend on my PC, what might be the difference?

Ah, no, when I use the UI to modify the config, E:D labels it Custom. I am only using the UI, *not* hacking the config file.

I shouldn't have to do this. The game should handle config itself.

The game does handle the config properly. If you leave the default Custom.binds the game will reset them to default after patches to make sure and changes to ED controls are reflected in the binding options. If you take 2 seconds to make a backup of the file and rename it, it won't be deleted again.

sarcastically "you can not be serious" :D he would have to do something only time my keybinds get reset is not backing them up and reformat or reinstall the game

I like my daily system backup *g*

But on topic: I didn't have to restore my bindings file since launch...strange

Thanks for your help. Having the user chase down a config file isn't really on though, I do think this is something they need to sort out.

It's not every time here, but it has happened more than once.

Agreed. You shouldn't be losing this then. You have every reason to grumble :D

I'll add my grumblesworth as well. Tested the 1.1 beta no issues. Upgraded launcher/game to official 1.1 last week. Finally found time to play tonight for the 1st time. Can I? No - all UI configured custom controls wiped. Too annoyed to go through reconfiguring it all again.

Off to go play something else instead.

At least through the forums I now know how to find the actual custom config file for back up purposes in future... deep sigh...

If you drop a copy into C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Frontier_Developments\products\FOR-FDEV-D-1010\ControlSchemes and rename it to <my_config>.binds it will forever be selectable in the dropdown list :D

ps that's ...\Frontier_Developments\... with an underscore

I use Hotas Warthog, everytime I come back to controls all my settings are gone when I select Hotas Warthog, If I understand correctly all the comment above,

when I set my Hotas Warthog and click on apply, will it be saved at costum? is it correct? if the answer correct,

it means when I want to edit the previous setting , I do not need to go to my Hotas Warthog profile, so I can just edit the costum , can anyone confirm this? thanks.
