Custom design your ships optional interal slots.

To make each players ship unique to their own needs, why not give each ship a pool of optional module points to spend to design their own optional slot layout.

Class 1 slot cost 2 points
Class 2 slot cost 4 points
Class 3 slot cost 8 points
Class 4 slot cost 16 points
Class 5 slot cost 32 points
Class 6 slot cost 64 points
Class 7 slot cost 128 points
Class 8 slot cost 256 points

Eagle default internals
2x Size 1 Compartments (4 points)
1x Size 2 Compartment (4 points)
1x Size 3 Compartment (8 points)

The Eagle has 16 optional module points to use to design you own unique layout.
Example: could be just one class 4 slot(16 points).

The Imperial Cutter internals
1x Size 3 Compartment (8 points)
1x Size 4 Compartment (16 points)
2x Size 5 Compartments (64 points)
3x Size 6 Compartments (192 points)
2x Size 8 Compartments (512 points)

The Cutter has 792 optional module points to use to design you own unique layout.
Example: could be..
x3 Class 8 slots (768 points)
x1 Class 4 slot (16 points)
x1 Class 2 slot (4 points)
x2 Class 1 slots(4 points)

Think it would be wise to have a hard cap on the amount of modules you can have (24-32) otherwise large ships could have 100's of class 1 slots.

Using a car analogy .. .. this would be akin to changing a Fiat Uno from a normal 5-seater with a small engine.. to a 2-seater with a V8 ..
.. this kind of magical handwavium doesn't sit well with me at all.

Props for the idea; but definitely not something to be implemented in ED, IMHO.

I actually really like this idea, it would definitely require some balance passes though. An eagle with a class 4 biweave would be a bit ridiculous. I’d be alright with this if there was a loss in space associated with each module you converted.

Ok, let's see –
Take the Cutter, add a class 8 shield and you'd have 536 points left to spare (792-256).
Now equip 268 1D Hull Reinforcement Packages (536/2) and ...
Voila! An unengineered Cutter with 29.480 hull.
With some nice rolls you get it to 50.000

Umm he said there would be limits on the number of slots. Also I’d like to add what I had in mind, make splitting modules an “at loss” decision. You could make a size 3 slot two size 1s for instance.

You're right, my bad, I've missed that one...
It's still a good example why it's likely to produce unbalance, as pointed out by Flimley.
1 5D HRP (+390 hull) would result in 16 1D HRPs (+1760 hull).
More importantly, when engineered you'd end up with the stacked resistances of 16 HRPs instead of just one...
The latter would be a problem even with a loss in splitting.
