Custom DLC: Mix and Match for players only interested in adding new animals

The first DLC is announced, which got me excited! It made me think of a DLC idea for the future, that I think many people would really appreciate. However, this can't be done until we've got several more packs released that include many more new animals.

Custom DLC

This will be a DLC with one standard price and is aimed at people who only want new animals and don't really care for new themes and scenarios.
  • This DLC will only contain a number of animals.
  • This DLC has a fixed number of slots.
  • These slots can be filled with animals from packs that are already released.
  • The buyer can fill the slots with animals of their choice.
  • Once all slots are filled, the buyer proceeds to checkout and receives their Custom DLC.
  • Buyers can comprise multiple Custom DLCs, as long as all the slots are filled*.
  • *Slots cannot be filled with an animal if that animal is already in the buyer's game.
So this is my idea :) It's a way to give people a chance to get the animals they desire, without having to buy all the DLCs that include many things they may not be interested in. I've purposely left out prices and number of slots, because I think that's for the developers to decide on.

Nice suggestion.

But I think this won't happen, because the strategy is to sell as many DLC's as you can (not strange, just business). So you want everybody to buy every pack, so every pack needs to contain at least 2-3 things that people want. Combining them would lead to maybe only 1 DLC sold.

It's a good idea, but from a economic perspective I don't think this will happen.

That's a good point. I think some tweaking to the number of slots and the purchase price could make up for that problem. For example, if a Custom DLC has 5 slots, and an average pack has at least 4 new animals (going off of this first DLC that has 4 animals), you will definitely need to buy multiple Custom DLCs if you want to max out the number of animal species in your game.

as i see it, this would mean that a single dlc can contain any dlc item, which essentially means either steam would have to track it, or frontier would have to make absolutely sure that the custom items can't be edited(or even have other dlc items added to it) using other software

seems more likely that frontier would then release DLC packs, which have, for example, artic items bundled together, while every item can be purchased individually, too, but the pack would be cheaper overall

How would you even do that? Steam doesn't implement anything like that.

You might be able to pull it off the other way around, first buy a "custom dlc" then choose animals from an in-game menu.

That would require its own infrastructure, which would cost to develop and maintain, and the animal prices would be higher than in normal DLCs. Then people would complain.

You'd be better off asking for each DLC pack to be split into 3 parts:
  • $2 for scenarios
  • $6 for animals
  • $2 for scenery

They won't do it though. They know most people will pay $10 just for the new animals, even if they don't care about scenarios or the themed building items.

One of the growing list of comments regarding the DLC on Steam. Hopefully the majority are fine with the combination ( even if they won't use the others at the moment ).
The new DLC is too expensive
It's $15 for four animals.

Splitting the items into separate packs was suggested on Steam as well.

What they should do [from a player perspective,] is specialize with their DLC. Instead of cramming in small amounts of the 3 major different ways players enjoy the game into one (animals, building/decorating, and scenarios [yes many players combine some]) they should release DLCs that focus on one each so players can choose the DLC they want to enhance their style of play.

What would be great though is the ability to create your own scenarios and scenery items :) So an in game editor would be great ( even as a DLC option ). That way they can concentrate more on animals for each DLC so either a lower priced DLC if 4 is the best they can do in a month, or a regular priced DLC with multiple animals in because they were able to spend more time on it. They could always put out a periodic DLC with scenarios and scenery items separately.

I thought about that as well, but that isn't a viable option. For instance with the new arctic pack, the scenarios depend on the animals and scenery items, so they have to come as one pack and can't be split off. However, the animals could be easily split from the other content, because they don't depend on the scenarios or scenery.

Should just add the scenarios to the base game, and lock them unless you own the correct animal DLC. That would lose them money though.
