Custom Steam Controller bindings

So I have a Steam controller.

It is pretty cool. Been spending the evening making a bespoke config for ESO. I'll be uploading the config once I have met the personal play time requirement.

The config uses all of the Steam controller's features, including the gyroscope. Yes, if you didn't know, the Steam Controller has a gyroscope. I'm using the gyroscope to give myself an extra four buttons on the device.

Left touchpad operates a radial menu for non-combat keys, right touchpad operates the mouse and interact key via click. Ability keys are similar to native gamepad mode (x/y/b/LB/RB), as is jump (a). 8-way WASD on the joystick, with click operating sneak. Left paddle for sprint, right paddle for ultimate/take all. Triggers assigned to mouse left/right, inverted. Gyroscope D-pad operates quickslot, roll dodge, synergy and toggle walk speed. Weapon swap handled by back button. Main menu opened with start button.

Result? I'm very happy with it, and allows me to play with PC interface despite using a console-style gamepad.

I would say that it's absolutely worth it.

The important thing to remember is that your games don't actually see it as a gamepad, but rather a mouse and keyboard as, for all intents and purposes, it is. Indeed, if you look at the connected devices on Windows 10, the controller will be in the same category as your keyboard and mouse.

As a result of this, it basically means you can, with a bit of tinkering, play any game with a gamepad. Even those with absolutely no gamepad support.

The experience is further enhanced on Steam by the fact that you use Big Picture Mode and explore other Steam Controller user's configs that they've uploaded to the public library. This feature is completely free to use.

Customisation of the controller is huge. You can even choose what type of mouse you want emulate. I use trackball as it allows for rapid character rotation. Great for PvP. It also features haptic feedback letting you "feel" the mouse.

As you can tell I'm a big fan of the controller. It's arguably the best gamepad on PC for its sheer customisation options. It makes the Xbox Elite controller look cute at best. And, the Steam Controller is fairly affordable, costing around the same as a regular Xbox One controller. But with the crazy amount of options on the Steam Controller, it is much better value IMO.

If you have any questions, And that goes for anyone reading this, please ask. :)

It's a lovely piece of kit. Not quite as good as a 360 controller or a mouse/keyboard for games designed around them, but a great hybrid for games that can take advantage of a bit of both. It's pretty neat to use controller bindings in a game yet still have a nicely responsive mouse pointer available on the trackpad whenever the controller UI is a pain and you just want to click somewhere. I have barely scratched the surface with configuration though, I mostly just browse through the many pre-existing ones from other players.

There's definitely a learning curve.

I'll be honest, I actually got the thing years ago. Was feeling pretty crap from depression and got it to make myself "feel better".

Gathered dust for a while. Yesterday I thought to myself though, "what if?"

Fired up Steam and hooked up the controller. Few hours later and I've made this custom config for ESO, which is now also available in the public library.

Had to add a fifth binding to the radial menu. Forgot the change camera binding!

Three new radial bindings added. scroll up, scroll down for zoom, and T for quest toggle. Will update public profile later.

Update: Discovered the mode shift feature.

With this feature, and a bit of configuration, I can now dodge roll exactly the way I could on console. Gyroscope is no longer needed. That said, it's good to know how to use the gyroscope for any future application.

Personal note for anyone reading: Steam Controller is £39.99 when purchased in the Steam app. Do not buy off Amazon. You pay a SIXTY QUID PREMIUM there. Yes, the SC on Amazon is £99.99...

I highly recommend this gamepad, because it's not just any gamepad, but the most advanced gamepad available right now, that any true PC gamer will appreciate the design of. It does require setup, but that is what makes it so much better than your normie Xbox controller.

And it's £80 cheaper than Microsoft's "advanced" model... In fact it's slightly cheaper than the standard controller LOL.

Ordered mine yesterday since you intrigued me...I read the reviews on Steam...I really do..but mostly I pay as much attention to them as I did with the operators instruction manual that came with my wifes new vacuum cleaner :)

I think you'll love it. The configuration UI is great, and really simplistic in many respects.

With that said, the potential to go nuts with the bindings is huge. Plus, if you decide to get a Steam Link or build one yourself from a Raspberry Pi, the Steam Controller is the perfect gadget to have on your couch, alongside a cheap wireless keyboard from ASDA. Won't need a mouse as you can use the controller for that.

Right I just got done rearranging the radial layout.

Think this might be the final config. I can't think of anything to add.
