CV1 best settings?

Hello guys,

i finally bought the Oculus CV1 and a Gtx1060 6gbyte.

I downloaded the Elite Dangerous Profiler v2.3 and tryed out the Ultra VR Settings and the game runs smooth, but the Text is a bit blurry and the game Looks a lil bit pixalted. What do i have to Change to get the best possible VR graphics?

I allready tryed the Oculusdebugtool but it says "unable to connect to Service".

Anybody got some advice for a total PC noob?

Reduce supersampling settings in the VR settings of Elite and turn up HMD quality. You can also go the exact other way, by increasing supersampling and reducing HMD quality.
Personally, i use supersampling set to 1.0 and HMD quality set to 1.5 on a GTX 1080ti, which works excellent for me. A 1060 might require some lower settings on the smaller value, like .65 to 1.5 or .85 to 1.25... But this depends on your personal quality standards.
The higher you get one of the values, the sharper the whole image will become. Experiment a little, what works best for you.

Different things seem to work for different people so I won't be too dogmatic with my views. That being said, it does seem that the sweet spot is:
- Super-sampling 1.5
- HMD quality 1.5 or >
- Other graphic settings up where you want (until you get judder, then back off slightly).

When looking at the other settings, start with anti-aliasing. SMAA is definitely a resource hog. I noticed from other threads that some players have turned of anti-aliasing or use FXAA instead. I found FXAA gives a good result for my set up and lets me run higher graphics settings without judder. Just so you know, all of the HMD's have some "screen door" effect and the text will be pixelated or blurry regardless of what settings you use.

Somehow i can crank basically EVERYTHING in edprofiler up to Ultra and i ddont notice any framedrop, i also dont notice any difference in the graphics aswell, the only Thing that changes is the Hud colour. (My EDprofiler starts up the Launcher when i click "luaunch elite, and than i have to start the game.exe from the launcher, i pick "Elitedangerous: Horizons 64 bit"? is that the correct way??

For antialiasing is SMAA the best? or is MSAAx4 better?
And last questions and most important: do you guys tweak you Elitedangerous Virtual reality Experience ONLY with EliteDangerousProfiler or do you use something else aswell?

Depending on your GPU, it's quite possible to run everything in VR Ultra mode. Until you try changing Supersampling, or pixel density. Then you will get a slideshow in your brain, and you will pass out. (probably :D )

Antialiasing, SMAA is by far the better image quality. MSAAx2 or x4 willcause immense slowdown, and image quality is poor in VR anyway due to the resolution, and the way MSAA works. Some people say FXAA is a good VR AA, but that's very specific to your own eyes.

By far the best way to get high image quality is to crank up HMD t0 1.5 or 1.75 if your PC can handle it. 2.0 is too high and will likely cause judders, especially in stations and in slightly dense areas of space. The holy grail seems to be 1.25 SS and 1.5 HMD, and then tweaking graphics settings until you get a reasonably stable image. Reducing Ambient Occlusion make a BIG different to FPS. Also, I find removing Blur, Bloom and lowering FX settings helps with FPS too. Ideally you want 90 FPS without Asynchronous Space/Time Warp kicking in, but that is usually impossible if you use SS or HMD settings higher than 1.0. ASW is more or less fine, you might notice the odd glitching of text in stations for example, but nothing really offputting.

Also, change the HUD to green, and reduce the brightness - this make a HUGE difference to the readability IMO. Blue and Red colours make it a lot more uncomfortable IMO.

How do i turn up the Pixel density? can i do it with EDprofiler?
if i Change the values of supersampling and orHMD Image Quality i dont notice any difference??? please help

You can use EDProfiler to change all settings including super-sampling and HMD image quality. I see a noticeable difference with super-sampling and HMD image quality on low with my HMD so its possible that other settings are masking the effect.

Out of game try the following settings in EDProfiler:

Model Draw Distance: 25%
Texture Quality: Max
Shadow Quality: Low
Bloom: On
Anti-Aliasing: FXAA (SMAA and MSAA use a lot of resources and can cause judder. FXAA uses less resources.)
Super-sampling: 1.5X (if too high can causes judder and you will have to lower other settings)
Ambient Occlusion: Off (some players have this on, but I don't see any change with it on)
Environmental Quality: Max
FX Quality: High
Depth of Field: Off (VR does this)
Reflections Quality: High
Material Quality: Max
HMD Image Quality: 1.5 (or higher but only if no judder)
Galaxy Map Quality: Low or medium
Terrain Quality: Max
Terrain Work: Minimum (This seems to cause judder on high settings)
Terrain Material Quality: Max
Terrain Sample Quality: Max
Field of View: Max.

Press apply and save profile to make sure the changes are saved.

Also check 3D settings in your Nvidia control panel. Make sure that all settings are "application controlled". However, in the anti-aliasing section you can choose "enhance application settings" and try x2 or x4. This sometimes helps with aliasing. If you are using Steam, don't have super-sampling ramped up in Steam and ED. Use one or the other and set the one not being used to "1").

Restart the game. Have the loading shaders option on to make sure the changes take effect. Go to the start menu (with the SRV and hanger). Look left and right a few times. Should be smooth. If there is juddering or lag, you will need to exit to the desktop and turn some settings down. Leave super-sampling, anti-aliasing and HMD image quality the same and change some of other settings from max to high. This may take a few attempts. Exit the game to the desktop each time. If you can't get rid of the juddering or lag, then you will need to reduce super-sampling or HMD image quality slightly (e.g. by .25). In that case, you may be able revert to max on the other settings that you turned down. Just trial and error and a matter of being methodical, but you should find the sweet spot for your rig i.e. nice and smooth.

With the aliasing, check under the ship in the hanger. There will be some aliasing on the floor. You then can try between FXAA and SMAA and changing the 3d settings in your Nvidia control panel to see what anti-aliasing works best for you. Again, exit the game and restart it to see the effect of any changes.

Just a note to keep expectations in check. You won't get the text in-game totally clear or remove all aliasing. There will be pixilation ("screen door") and aliasing regardless. Just trying to minimise these.A GTX 1060 has its limits I'm afraid.

Let me know how you get on :)
