CV1 Delivered Yesterday - Couple of Questions

Nor would I. However coming from another VR HMD, the DK2, which was a much cheaper device and provides a comparable experience (arguably better in some areas) I cannot say that it is worth every penny at all. I'm honestly considering getting rid of my CV1 and keeping the DK2 at the moment - I would do this in a heart beat if future compatibility was guaranteed for the DK2. I find the DK2 a more comfortable device, it lacks god rays and only has a slightly poorer perceived resolution and SDE than the CV1, making it, in my eyes the better bit of kit per UK pound of the two.

The ONLY things I would miss about the CV1 is the 360 tracking and longer cable, for £500 that ain't good value. I'm pretty disappointed by the CV1 in all honesty.

Actually, As much as I like my CV1 and consider it a significant upgrade over the DK2 over all and worth the extra 250 quid.... in ED specifically I think you have a point. Of all the apps and games I have tried in DK2 and CV1, for me Elite is probably the least "biggest" jump in quality, and with probably the biggest negative (godrays in ED are more noticeable than any other app I have tried)

Yup, such a shame as well.

I, like many others here will likely spend and have likely spent the majority of their "VR time" in Elite Dangerous. I cannot tell you how disappointing it was when I first fired up Elite on my CV1. I expected an improvement and got something that was just mildly better but with many draw backs. None of which are down to FDEV (other than perhaps the crashing issue) but down to the CV1 device itself.

I don't even want to acknowledge the 'red tint' issue at this time as I only noticed it in Ethan Carter last night... but god this kit has soooo many draw backs and hardly any positives... I really want to think otherwise but I'm starting to think the CV1 needed a few months in the oven.

I already have a support tickets open with both FDEV and Oculus and it's only my 2nd day with the unit. I'm hoping Oculus replace my current unit as it appears to have a screen defect in the lower part of the left screen, only visible during very dark scenes.

Basically, I get this effect but only in very dark scenes - it is not noticeable at any other time (not at all in Elite oddly enough).

If I get any trouble I'll likely just pass the matter on to my CC company to sort out and buy a VIVE at a later stage.

Hmm, sorry you've found the CV1 a bit of a let-down. :( Personally, coming from a DK2, and as I wrote in my "5 steps forward, 1 step back" thread I still see it as rather a significant leap from DK2 but I can see how the god-rays issue could bother some people more than others. For me the comfort, the built in headphones, the lack of chromatic aberration (at the cost of god rays if I understand the basics) and the general clarity across the full image (rather than just the middle) is decent progress. But god rays is definitely an area that VR research needs to crack.

Glad i resisted the urge to buy a DK2 now... as someone whose first HMD is a CV1 then its worth the money and more i would say.

Maybe not having any expectations walking into the experience means the CV1 excels whereas if the DK2 was 'decent' then walking into the CV1 is a bit of a let down.

Still.. i would say to anyone waiting on an order.. its worth the wait!

Ha, thanks. I think the overall disappointment is contained, mostly, to the CV1 and Elite. I've enjoyed all of the other games I have for the device but I can't say I have spent the 1000 odd hours in a DK2 on those and as such have nothing to compare them to. Maybe it's why I'm not so critical of them....

Headphones? First thing I did was remove them to be honest. Too much hassle to use them with my Buttkicker and I don't want the added audio latency issues added by using VAC and alike.

I found the DK2 much more comfortable. The CV1 seems to put pressure on my forehead, loosening the device causes it to slip and move. I notice that if you do not angle or tilt the screen slightly up I get screen distortion when moving my head left or right, doing so adds even more forehead pressure. No matter what adjustments I have made to the device I think the fit is quite poor on me at least.

Ha ha, it just goes to show how different we all are! The killer feature of the CV1 for me are the ergonomics and the headphones. ;) Did you at least try the headphones, they're pretty damn good? But I guess as you have extra stuff in the shape of a buttkicker then that's an added issue. I got sick fed up of the headphone dance when using the DK1 and DK2 - I ended up using speakers more often than not, just to avoid it.

Not sure why you need the device tilted up - I can angle it so there's more pressure up high or down low (but generally keep it even) and notice no visual changes. I assume you have the rear triangle in the "right" spot? So that it's taking some of the load.

If the ergonomics fail you and you're not using the included headphones I'd be tempted to fleabay it and get a Vive to be honest.

Ha, yeah indeed!

I tried the headphones, they were okay, nothing special from what I used of them other than, and as you say, more convenient. Unfortunately the convenience of them is outweighed by the need to drive my Buttkicker in the most optimal fashion due to the added immersion it provides, so they had to go. Which thankfully they are designed to do. I have some wireless headphones I'm using for now, but I'll be going back to cabled ones later today when my extender cable arrives.

Yeah I have the 'Rear Triangle' in the correct spot, but I can't get a comfortable fit out of the device no matter what I try. Oddly, I never found the DK2 uncomfortable, I used for hours at a time too, as I'd rate the CV1 closer to the HMZ-T1 I modded into a cycle helmet... Bearable. Early days I guess, maybe I'll grow used to it.

I would consider EBaying the device, but as per my earlier post I believe the device has a slight display fault which is only noticeable in extremely dark scenes, such as those found in Ethan Carter. I hope for an exchange, after which I'll re-asses my options. I'm not too big on room scale VR, I love motion control VR however so the VIVE isn't that appealing a device for me, particularly the lack of any non teleportation first person locomotion based content. Oculus seems to be leading the way on that stuff, and along side simulation, first person experiences are next on my list.

Interesting,

My rift arrived this week and I already have a vive. I find the rift much harder to get adjusted and much more sensitive to position on my head. Most of the time I find the FOV very narrow and I can see the edges of the screen (e.g. the FOV is rectangular) tilting the headset seems to alleviate this but I have not had time to play around too much.

I am also not impressed with the colour banding and god rays in Elite so far (again need to tweak when I have time) So far the jury is out but I am very impressed with the improved resolution and screen door over the DK2.

Ryder35,

I am very interested to hear your comparison of the CV1 vs Vive in ED. In my experience the Vive in ED is blurry and I get a better result in my DK2 (waiting for my CV1). (Even with the new ED beta)

This blurriness doesn't seem limited to ED either. I played PCars in the Vive for several hours, then I swapped over to my "old" DK2, and I was stunned at how much clearer everything is. I can read the small text easily whereas in the Vive it's a blur. I can clearly see the pixel structure in the Vive so I don't think it's my eyes.

god rays in ED in the cv1 rift are a bit of a PITA and imo do take away from what is almost a perfect VR experience (its still better than DK2 over all tho imo)

The way I see it, in game (so excluding menus etc) the god rays in ED are the worst i have seen so far in every app i have tried, so on the bright side, at least anyone who sees ED, if they decide they can live with it, then they are laughing for every other game.
