CV1 First impressions + an audio issue

So my Rift arrived Friday along with a Gigabyte 1070, had a play around in the dream deck and let the family have a go. Have to say it was pretty amazing, doesn't matter how you explain it to somewhere that feeling of presence and immersion is incredible.

So after a bit of fun with some demos and Luckys Tale I thought I'd get to Elite. And WOW! It really was everything I hoped it would be. I can't explain it, it's a completely different game and it's bloody brilliant.

Yes there's some issues, resolution, shimmering/aliasing etc but none of these really spoil the experience for me, I absolutely love it. And best of all I thought I'd have a problem with motion sickness but I've been absolutely fine for 99% of he time! For some reason Luckys Tale seems to make me a little queasy after about 20 minutes, odd..
And godrays, a quick mention as I looked for them and can see them now and again mainly in loading screens etc but can honestly say they don't bother me at all. As I saw someone else mentioned here in Elite it just adds to the feeling I'm wearing a helmet!

So there is one problem that's doing my head in, audio with Elite. Pretty quickly I worked the issue with no sound at all, set the rift to use Windows default audio device and then set that to the Rift headphones, all good. Unfortunately not. It works fine for a random time, normally a couple of minutes then sound is lost. If you open the playback devices in Windows and disable then re-enable the rift headphones it comes back for a few minutes then it goes again. This is a pain as obviously it breaks immersion to keep taking the HMD off to fix this.

Has anyone else had this problem and is this an issue with Elite or the Rift or my PC?

In the Oculus Home - settings - Devices - Rift, I have the (VR Audio Output setting as Rift Headphones) and (Input as Rift Microphone) for voice attack and windows playback is set to (Headphones - Rift Audio - Default device) and Recording is (Microphone - Rift Audio - Default Device) if you havent tried this already.

Also i use audio switcher for quick hot key switching between rift, speakers and A50's, works great.

I have a similar issue with my system but not the rift thankfully. To save having to switch audio devices all the time (cos ed never picked up the rift headphones automatically) ive removed the rift headphones and just use my usual gaming set for everything. It used realtek HD manager and seems fine.

The issue i had that was similar was in trying to get 7.1 surround through my home theatre setup in the living room over hdmi. Basically id be happily playing witcher 3 and id get glitching followed by loss of audio. Drove me absolutely insane.

In the end i tracked it down to the nvidia hdmi audio drivers basically being awful. So if i had a suggestion it would be, if you have an nvidia card, to always exclude the audio elements when installing drivers so windows is forced to use the microsoft hdmi audio driver which seems to just work. P

Another issue ive had recently with audio did affect the rift and one of two things ive done seemed to fix it - stop all tasks and processes related to the xbox 1 wireless controller (im using a hotas so dont need it) and updating the realtek driver.

I also always completely disable all my other audio devices.

Whether any of the above makes a difference when you're using the rift audio device i doubt of course...

Thats all i have. This stuff really makes me remember why i didnt PC game or use PCs in my personal life for about 10 years. I have no time to game and when i get a chance i basically use most of my session dealing with nonsense like this. Seems the more you spend on your gaming rig the less it work, mental that i should have to spend 3 days getting 7.1 surround sound out of £1000s of computer. *grump*.

Cheers I tried this and seemed to have some success, certainly with Elite I had a good hour on it and the sound seemed fine so I thought that may be fixed. However when I closed down Elite and tried a different demo it then dropped half way through so now I'm not sure. I'll have another play tomorrow and see how it looks.

Id certainly prefer to use the rift headphones if I can as the quality seems very good and I don't currently have an alternative. Interesting regarding the Xbox controller I have just left that plugged in so will try removing it. Will certainly check the driver situation out though as well and see if there's updated ones for my hardware. Thanks.
