General / Off-Topic Cyanogenmod alternative to Android?

Has anyone had any experience with this? It seems like something I need, but it would be nice to get some confirmation from someone has tried it.

I'm not sure if its an addon or if its meant to replace the OS

I just read about this this morning.

It looks very interesting, I guess what puts a lot of people of is the horrible install. Once that's been fixed I've got an old Android phone that's asking to fry it out.

Thought I would resurrect this. to see if anyone has had experience of Cyanogenmod since the original post.

Last time I tried setting up an Android system with Cyanogenmod, it bricked it completely. However, that was over a year ago and they may have improved since then.

I installed CyanogenMod 7.2 onto my HTC Desire HD about a year and a half ago.
I was on the brink of chucking the phone and getting a new one but the improvements it made to battery life for me was so impressive I kept it for about another year. I sold it on eBay last week as the phone recycler I went to wouldn't accept anything without the original software on it.
