D rated thrusters vs A rated

My cutter has 8D thrusters with lvl 5 DD (278-435 m/s). What benefits would 8A thrusters give besides a little more speed? Iv heard people say never skimp on thrusters but I'm trying to maintain a good jump range. I get 33ly now fully armed with d rated engineered shields/boosters (2300+ mj) and fighter hanger. If I upgrade the thrusters, and required power plant, it's gonna knock me under 30ly.

My trading cutter build. I use 7D :)

Putting A rated thrusters on will reduce the drift, give you a better turning circle and better acceleration as well as slightly better top speed (marginal).
In that build I've not yet met anything I can't easily escape from (speed + chaff + shields = survival) so I took the weapons off. The point where I start taking hull damage is the time I'll consider upgrading my thrusters. Until then I have no need to.

For you and combat it'll help. My advice is try it just after doing combat and see if you notice the difference. Modules sell for 100% of value and you can store any engineered stuff in case you want it back it won't cost you anything to test and try (unless you die in which case rebuy will be more).

Thanks for the reply. I'm not dedicated combat, I do a little of everything--including exploring (within 5000ly) which is why I like the jump range. Iv taken it to hi-Rez several times and it rips apart everything. Anything less than an anaconda can't even drop one shield ring usually.

Thrusters dictate much more then just max speed and max speed while boosted.

Thrusters also dictate your maneuverability. Higher rated thrusters means a much faster Pitch/Yaw/Roll rate.

Thrusters also dictate how heavy you can make your ship. Higher rated thrusters increase how much total mass they can push allowing you to make your ship heavier without sacrificing normal space and Supercruise performance. It also increased the optimal mass which increases your speed, maneuverability, and even acceleration/deceleration responsiveness.

Jump range only matters if you're doing constant jumps.

For everything else, thrusters are by far the most important component.

D-rated thrusters may be lighter but they're also the lowest integrity which means they won't last longer then even E rated thrusters. B rated will give you highest integrity which means they'll last longer under fire, even if they're the heaviest ones. A-rated is best performance but they're power hungry.

You want to see that vanted Cutter speed and maneuverability everyone raves about? A rated or bust.
