Damage model.

Is it complex or simple? Are individual systems modelled and capable of being damaged (and subsequently repaired/replaced) or does enemy fire simply knock out the shield, then degrade the hull by percentages and then you die?

TIA. :)

you can select subtargets and destroy them.

saw a stream where an anacondas shields were taken down and then fired at the power plant. the ship exploded when powerplant got destroyed although there was like 40% hull left.

examples of other subsystems:
- drives
- shield generators
- cargo hatch
- single weapons
etc.

Jorlin is correct, there is modular damage applied to ships systems based on the position of the hit.

There's not yet much of a visual representation of the damage, but the game logic is there.

at least, you can see what is damaged to which extent when cycling through the enemies subtargets.

I'm thinking of finer 'granularity' than that guys. Like your radar system being knocked out, life-support (oxygen), that kind of stuff. :)

And when things really go south is it possible to bail out and then radio for a rescue from some kindly passer-by (assuming your enemy doesn't kill you in your lifeboat)?

what i experienced in alpha 1.1 so far is:
- canopy breach... oxygen for 2 minutes.
- damaged guns malfunctioning

no visual lifeboats so far, sorry. no podtravelling, no podkilling.

That is what we've been describing, that's what's already in the alpha. All the modules can be individually taken out. You can lose you weapons, your drive, you life support etc. Everything listed in the modules section has it's own separate hitpoints.

When something gets damaged it starts to malfunction, take too much damage and that system stops working. This is when it's helpful to have fitted the auto repair module. Especially if it's something like a malfunctioning laser that won't stop firing!

It's terrifying when you windshield gets blown out and you're on an oxygen mask with a limited supply.

So I can be damaged but run and hide in an asteroid-field and repair the damage if I have the right kit. Sounds very good. :)

But not possible to eject/bail out and survive if my ship is clearly about to die? How about surrendering and paying off my attacker, is there a quick and easy way to tell him? Discretion being the better part of valour and all that jazz.

you will automatically be ejected (only in ironman mode you need to do it by yourself i think). there is just no animation showing your escape pod on it's way home (yet?).

the details on surrender are not yet implemented as there is no communication between players so far.

All that kind of surrendering or paying off other players will come with comms.

At present in Alpha 4 you get NPC pirates demanding cargo, if you drop them some they leave you be, if they think it's enough. Don't hang around to watch them though, they most likely come after you anyway once they have scooped.

Has there been any chat about damage models still coming?

I know way back there was talk of crippled ships limping home with their guts hanging out.

I am hoping that is still coming, also, ships seem to always go "pop" at the moment.

I would love to see a ship just go dead after the CMDR has taken a hit to the face after the shields were down and the canopy breached.

(I know debris would eventually have to blow up to stop clogging the server up, but, it could lead to time limited sub missions where you could tow broken ships in for salvage etc)

I know this was talked about long ago, I just wonder if it has had to be put aside or if it is still coming?

cheers

This question was rised during first official Twitch stream with community manager Mark Boss and ED producer Adam Woods. Adam said "soon", so they know we expect them, and they will appear at one moment, I will guess during premium beta cycle.

How does the repair tool work? Does it only repair subsystems or even the hull?
Does it need to be activated somehow or is it automatically?
And is it draining power from the SyS , If so does the repair time speeds up if I put more pips in it.

Lobstris complained about this the other day, so I came up with a few alternatives to "pop": http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17978

It would be nice to have persistent visible damage to damaged ships, to appease all of those who grew up watching black and white WWII Bomber Squadron films on rainy Saturday afternoons :).

Current repair kit you can buy and put on your hard point spends sort of "ammo" meant for it, which you need to replenish it regularly. However, it is very rudimentary and we expect other forms of repairs to come.

You have to activate the panel on the right, above the damaged system.

Ahh thank you.
Ive mostley been flying around in an eagle but yesterday I tried out the cobra and bought that repair kit as well.
After some tough fights my ship was damaged but I never figured out how that repair stuff worked.
