Damage Models in ED?

I've just watched this impressive video, especially how the models break apart is nice.

And remembered this

Is this ever going to make it into Elite?

That's just one more thing on the long list of (seemingly) planned features which didn't make it into the release, and which devs aren't even mentioning any more.

I have to say that the level of detail is very impressive and took me back a bit. I couldn't help but wonder and hope that some more in-depth and visible damage will be used in Elite at some point in the future.

I know there is already a slight wear and tear mechanic on the paintwork, although even after actively avoiding repairing it in the hopes of having a more "worn in" looking ship, I couldn't see much of a difference between the states, despite there being long periods of SC and multiple interdiction and subsequent dogfights/evasions.

Obviously the damage would be lessened dramatically with sufficient shielding, but my unshielded Adder was barely scratched.

The depth of the damage in that vid, O_O. Showing actual prices of the ship flying off after a lot of fire, affecting maneuvering, etc. Just wow. I would love it if Frontier were able t take some inspiration from this and implement it in some way, or just improve what we already have to add similar depth beyond basic module percentages etc.

This seems like it will be a nightmare to get working alongside with the zone-based partitioning structure that Chris Roberts mentioned in a recent interview.

So far the SC guys seem to be working on about 8 different games in the hope that they will all somehow fit together in an resource-efficient and playable manner in the end.

I can foresee Roberts going out like Tony Montana when it all falls apart and the angry mob of backers come calling...

...but I hope not.

You can see some of this if you drop into an USS where there are cannisters floating about - usually there is also the debris of some dead ship out there too.

I had a very good look at part of the carcass of what I guess was an Orca with the bright sun glistening on it as it slowly tumbled, and the interior struts on display.

I'd have loved to been able to cut it up with my lasers and collect it as scrap, or be able to tow it in as salvage, but perhaps that will come in the future. Can you imagine the immense fun doing that in a combat zone - rescuing bits and pieces of exploded large ships while the furball carries on around you?

Also, I miss being able to collect Alien Artefacts, which fits into the same meme, but I know we have to wait for that :)

I've seen papers that describe methods to allow CSG operations on free-form meshes, which would solve this issue at least in part, but I don't know enough about the required data structures to predict how efficient and flexible that can be.
