Damage - When is enough enough?

So i've been thinking about the damage. Sure, there are pilots that can make it to Sag A* without damage. I'm not one of them.

When should you return? I used to think 55% was a good point, then you could make an equal amount of mess-ups and make it back to base with 10% hull.

However, last trip out, i had about 10% left when I caught my mistake. (ran to deal with something in the middle of a jump and left the throttle just above zero)

I found the ship at 10%, but as I was pulling out of the heat, the canopy blew, leaving me far out with 7.5 minutes to get home, the ship was flyable, but no chance of making it...

So what's your take on enough is enough, when do you head back?

Thanks for the thread, I just crashed into a star reading it, still at home, so no harm

It really all depends on you. My last trip to the black was 150 Kylie and had Hull 96%, PP 98% remaining, yet 100ly bimbling across know space does the same damage (thanks again for that, plus I just nearly ran into an outpost)

Personally I don't explore when I might be seriously interrupted. But if pushed for a figure, I would head back at about 65 or 75, but then I would have had a disaster to get that bad.

Yeah I was sitting pretty at 96% and about 10k ly out when my two year old disengages the FSD while i'm at 1500c... now i'm at 86%.

You can't just stop! You have to slow down first!

I called it quits with about %15 and a spider web for a canopy last trip. As long as my modules are operational, I'd probably stay out even with 5%.

And that's why I have Backspace as "Throttle - 0%" :D
I'm just getting started with exploration - had a short trip to the North America Nebula. Now I'm heading to the Sag A. 4 kLy away from Sol, still have 98% hull.
60% would be a good measure, I think. And always watch your canopy...

I use an x55... no buttons for throttle.

is there anyway to determine what the canopy status is?

Is not really a straight answer I think...not all airplane crashes would be avoided in the same way...

I am very cautious and learned my lesson early in civilization on how to DO NOT handle heat. Now, I successfully traveled over 25,000 light years with only 1% damage. Until few systems ago, in a few minutes I lost 4% more damage...

Reason? ALL FOR PLANETARY RINGS!! Dipped into them too fast or even inadvertently...

I am still 9,000 ly from SAG A*, and going to a couple of places on my way back to civilization, so I am looking at some 40-45k light years ahead of me...At this rate, 1% every 5,000ly, I should hit civilization with 86% Hull remaining.

But, I could get better, or I could get worse! Could start by no getting anywhere close to a ring giant!! <--lol, not happening!

In any case, I would start getting back if I hit less than 45% and 15,000 ly from Sol, adding 5% for every extra 5,000 ly of distance.

I just normally go back because I reached destination, and want to sell, so this is not a figure that normally concerns me, but maybe more critical for wanderers.

I was hit for the 6% of damage visiting 3 systems and not knowing about hitting 0 throttle before entering a Black Hole / Neutron Star system. That was something like 20KLY ago and (touch wood) nothing since - although that last system was close.

I was considering heading back if it got below 90% but then I'm out here with no means of repair at all.
