Hardware & Technical Damn Apple Junk... Help?

So, last year, precisely 1 year, and 1 week ago, I brought my girlfriend a shiny new iPhone 6s.
It worked wonderfully, until yesterday.

Now it says "No Service" or "Searching".

She's kept it in good condition, in a hard case, and then inside a padded sleeve case.
Never dropped, never dunked in liquid, never sat on.
Yet it's chosen to die just outside of warranty.

On the other hand, my good old original Nexus 5, is still going strong despite being treated general like crap. Lol it had a new battery, it regularly overheats due to charging, while playing music, and being my satnav for work, while also being baked by the sun.
It's also been dropped, and gotten very wet.
Yet it's only problem, is the torch won't stay on sometimes, which it's had since I got it. Lol
And it's 4 years old this year. None of my previous android phones have had a major failure either, just new batteries.

Now I'm a firm hater of Apple products. No secret there, IMHO, they're overpriced garbage (I don't like Samsung or Sony either for the same reason). But my girlfriend loves them (for some reason), so I'm trying desperately to fix this £600 paperweight for her.

I've tried a load of the typical things, reboot, SIM swap (her SIM works in my phone, my SIM doesn't in her phone), aeroplane mode off/on, reset network settings, etc. Even a gentle "whack" on things (don't tell her!)
The only thing we haven't done is a full on factory reset, and that's because apparently you can't activate the phone after the reset if it has no service. (I read it somewhere...?)

Yet nothing works.

It's just out of warranty, which is typical.

Is there anything else I can try?

According the the Apple support site, it'll cost about £300 to repair, half the price of the damn phone!
All this experience is doing is cementing my hatred for all things Apple. Lol

My iPhone5 appeared to brick the other day. It was sorted by pressing the home and power buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo came up on the screen.

Good luck :)

We're currently trying to backup all the data on the phone, and do a full factory reset. The only problem is, our internet is basically dial up speeds, and my girlfriend being, well, my girlfriend didn't want her phone to automatically back itself up overnight while charging "because reasons", so disabled it completely.
So now we're just sat around, waiting (not so) patiently, blaming everyone for this chaos, while it painstakingly uploads her photos. Lol

Admittedly, her sister is critically ill in hospital, so a phone failure right now is probably the worst possible time for it to happen, so she's stressed.

She asked "what am i going to do, I can't go without my phone!?"
So I offered her my really really old LG Optimus 2x that I keep laying around for emergencies, which is about 6 years old, and cost £100 new. Lol :D

It's dual core and everything!
Runs like a snail though, and the battery lasts about 8 minutes. But it's a phone. And it works better than £600 1 year old "state of the art" iSpoon. :D

She's not impressed. :p

Well, what she really needs is one of these:

Lmao, I had one of those. It's probably still in my parents attic somewhere. Probably still in working order. :p

Well. The saga continues.

Backing up the data took almost 4 hours.
Did a factory reset and...

Nothing.
Still no service.
It's currently hogging the internet to ensure we can't entertain ourselves while it goes about its updating business.

I did have a glimmer of hope when I put in a new SIM and it briefly mentioned updating carrier data. But then it went back to not knowing how to be a phone.

*Sigh*

Looks like I'm gonna have to send it off to Apple for an overpriced repair.
Or I could sue them...?

Can't really afford either. Lol

I'm so glad I have Android.
I love you, my trusty, seemingly invincible Nexus 5, and LG Optimus 2X.
Both made by LG. In Korea.
If either of you fail me, I know how to repair you myself, and you're cheap, so it doesn't particularly matter if I mess up. :D

My girlfriend won't let me tamper with her iPhone. Understandably. :p

And this is why I won't buy what I call CrApple products (MY words, not that of this forum)! I consider them to be over-priced and over-hyped.

I would check the small print on your bank account, some credit & debit cards come with mobile phone insurance... (now where is my hammer).

Well, part III of the iPhone saga.

I spent all morning calling various Tesco numbers to try and get it sorted, because that's where I got it from.
None were willing to help.
And i work for Tesco!.
So that was a bust, for now.
Next time my manager mentions good service.....

Then I rang up Apple support. Surprisingly good. They said take it to a store, so I did.
The store wiped the phone, again, and it still didn't work, and determined that it was just officially 5 days past it's warranty, and broken. (3 if you take off the first two days I spent trying to fix it!).
They said if I ring the Apple support again, they'll likely book it in for a free repair or replacement, due to being so close to the warranty, and with zero visible damage.

So I rang. And nope. "It's past it's warranty". Lol
So I have to take it back to the store tomorrow, and try and get them to help.

I still have two tricks up my sleeve.
1) is my consumer rights, it's not lasted what I think is a reasonable amount of time (370 days!), so Tesco owe me a full refund, repair or replacement, by law.

2) is I can be lazy and claim of my home insurance. Lol

Getting real tired of making phone calls...

Finally!

I rang Apple support, again, and convinced them to do the free repair, due to being so close to the warranty.

So it's been handed in, and it'll likely be swapped out for a new one for free in 5-7 days, because apparently they don't actually repair phones. Lol

Fingers crossed it's all good.

For future reference, do not buy expensive goods from Tesco. They won't help, even if you work there, and even if they legally have to!

And do ring Apple support, if your device fails just out of warranty, and is in good condition otherwise.
Say you're disappointed, but be polite, and mention the staff in your local apple retailer said you can get a CS code for a free repair. It's not guaranteed of course, and depends entirely on your mannerisms and the condition of the phone (that the Apple store WILL check). But it beats paying the £300 repair bill for it. :)
It also helps to try and get through to the more helpful Irish or American support staff. The English ones are a bit "meh". Lol

So, I officially hate Apple far less than I did before.
I still won't buy any of their stuff for myself, but their support is amazing.

I'd say glad it ended well but until you get the new phone, who knows? :)
I'm hoping for no more hickups. But atleast I have the supervisors direct number and a load of reference numbers. Lol

I'm probably being silly being an avid hater of Apple products. They always look amazing, and can do some great things, but I'm not a fan of closed systems and not being able to mess around with stuff. :p
And they can't support a lot of games, names Horizons. And they're expensive. :p
Or what I really should say, is I'm poor and can't afford Apple products, and it's more cost effective to build a hideous windows tower PC to play my games on. :p

I suppose I don't really hate Apple, they just don't suit my needs, at all. :)
