Damn you Newton! Newton?

Hello all. Love the game warts and all.........

I have a few observations.

1) Switch off flight assist and hit the booster. Now watch as the speed drops back to max cruise after the boost phase is completed. How do we think Sir Isaac would feel about this?

2) Fuel scooping. I fill up my active resevoir but keep scooping in the vain hope that I can top off my fuel tank as well. Without success.

3) Can I please change my in game name and keep my current status? CMDR Philip Foster, callsign Black Jacket is just fine but CMDR Black Jacket is silly in my poor addled world.

4) Can I please name my ship? Please? Pretty please? With a cherry on top?

Thankyou for your time.

1) He would probably say "I need to invent a fourth law of motion. Fetch me my best quill."
2) I love an optimist.
3) Cmdr Black Jacket sounds quite cool.
4) What would you call your ship?

Oh I don't know. Can I still have 'The Righteous Indignation'? 'MacRoberts Reply'? 'Lady MacBeth'? I know they've all been done before though in real life or in literature. I do have a more original name in mind for my Cobra but I'm too shy to say. I tell you what though. There's a thread right there.

Oooh. Oooh. Speedo Ghost maybe?

I have noticed the boost issue as well. I suspect it has a gameplay reason but its a little silly since everything else in Elite seems to be doing its best to appear as scientifically accurate as possible. Fuel scooping's inability to top of the active fuel tank is a little irritating.

Asked and answered a million times, but: 1) Gameplay reasons. 2) Thats the way it is made. Dont know if they will change or not, but i believe there was a reply somewhere. Point being, it will probably stay that way. 3) No you cant change your name. Most MP games wont let you. There are bounties and stuff tied to names. If people change their names then those chasing wanteds wont know who they are all of a sudden. 4) Naming of ships might come afaik. Not yet though.

Thankyou for your time.

Maybe him and Einstein can have a fight over it?
.
Which law is greater compromised by Elite Dangerous? Newton's first law or Einsteins theory of relativity

Thanks Starjump. What are the gameplay reasons?

I think the problem with something being asked and answered millions of times is having to read through the millions of threads to find the answer. Much quicker to ask again in my experience.

Cheers.

I think max speed worked accordingly to newton's laws somepoint in beta.

And I also think that max speed is reduced so any player can catch you, playing the "boost game" with you...

EDIT: but it was more "realistic" before, and I liked it most :p

Arbitrary speed limits are in place to keep dogfighting at semi close ranges. So it flies like an arcadey ww2 combat game. That is, until your opponent realizes he is being out flown and just flies backwards.

I am confused. Different ships have different speed capabilities, a Cobra could, if the pilot has half a brain which I don't, dictate a fight with a Sidewinder because it is faster. It can extend away and increase the distance if that is what the pilot wants. I don't think that removing the arbitrary limit would make any difference to the gameplay.

Because if it was realistic, there woyld not be top speeds, but differing rates of acceration for each ship. They didn't want the combat to become long range, high speed jousting.

The speed cap depends on many factors about your ship, not only the ship you use.

But the main reason I see here is to give a boost to your speed limit, and that boost recharges back depending on many factors too. So, its all about game, not simulation ;)

You gotta try kerbal space program if you like simulation, and some fun...

Its a shame though. It'd make for another layer to the gameplay if you could start off the fight with missiles at long range and close the distance right down to guns. Or not. Or whatever. You know what I mean?

And once you stop accelerating you won't speed up any more than you'd slow down if it was real. Untill of course you hit a gravity well or something a bit more solid.

I'm just interested is all. It doesn't take anything away from it for me but I'm sure it would add something. I've never been a gamer and I've never gotten utterly engrossed in a game until now.

I get it now. I'm slow but it get it. You could just keep hitting the boost button until your fuel ran out and just keep accelerating. The dogfighting aspect of the game is meant to be a short and sharp tactical fight not long, slow strategic battle.

i can live with that and I've always got Doug Dandridge to read. He can make a day long battle sound exiting but I doubt it would work here.
