Dancin' gun reticles

Sometimes when i'm lined up against an enemy ship the gun reticles seem unable to focus on my opponent and i lose precious seconds before it does, is there anything i am doing wrong or is this the game being the game?

If you are using gimbaled weapons and have your targeting set to trailing this will happen. The reticule is showing you where the shot will land, but as your target changes speed and direction your weapons are moving to track it so this point will be continually changing. As you get closer to the target this effect will become more pronounced. As Error says, if your target uses chaff then your weapons won't lock and the reticule will dance around all over the place.

The NPCs use Chaff as error said, which messes up your weapon lock.
Just deselect target (a or y depending on your control settings) and fire like you have fixed weapons until the Chaff is finished then just lock target again.

If you have targeted a specific module though, it's easier just to keep lock on and wait for Chaff to finish. If you get close enough you can usually keep firing and still hit them anyway.

Unlocking target does help you to get used to using fixed weapons tho (they are bit more powerful but tricky to use against faster targets).

ah i didn't think of chaff. As for weapons, 2 gimballed pulses on medium and 2 gimballed cannons on small.
