Dark side of planets light

Is this new for 2.4? I thought there were already many threads on this?

Myself I wouldn't want them darker, but having toggle for "night vision" on off would be nice and hopefully would keep everyone happy.

There are many threads, it's to do with the lighting model and the fact that only one light source can be used at a time to light planets. It's been here for ages but it may be changed in 2.4 when they add support for multiple light sources. When the sun lights the side of planet the ambient light level is set by the lit side, this unfortunately results in a high ambient light level on the dark side. The best way to see this work is to visit a small moon during an eclipse, you will suddenly find the entire moon pitch black because the daylight side is now unlit and the ambient light level drops to zero.

If they start to use multiple light sources the light level of the night side of the planets and moons can be calculated separately from the daylight side taking into account the available light sources. As mentioned there is also the light from the skybox, but this is only used as the primary light source when you are on bodies far from the main star, it gets even more complicated with multiple stars because only one of these is used as the light source.

The multiple light source update has been rumoured to be very graphically intensive, so only high end PC's may be able to take advantage of it.

In light of the pseudo-simulator feeling that works so well with Elite what I would like to see as means of a proper solution is to do away with the brightness adjustment entirely, instead three tools should be in use:

- ship's lights (already here)

- altitude meter (already here)

- a hud terrain-mapper in the shape of a simpliefied vector-mesh overlay. I don't think it should be a special module, it should just be toggle-able in ship's functions or with the same shortcut as 'orbit lines' in SC.

1979 Alien or Subwar 2050 anyone?

Again, i see it quite similar. With the ship lights we allready discussed it. In addition, a mesh overlay would look cool. It's retro. Some people like it some don't.
I don't see why there shouldn't be a real night on the dark side of a planet and spots where you need your headlights. To inconvenient for some?
Of course on an ice world or with bright skies (moon shining) this differs. There is room for improvement in that but don't make it to demanding on the hardware.

DCS uses something called deffered shading for their lighting, but it is perfomance heavy.

My suggestion would be to allow the game to really darken and allow for an optical image enhancer which draws a simple white line around an object, such as a ship, space station, or planetary body.
I'm pretty sure I've seen that before somewhere ;)
