Dark souls II ?, anyone know anything about these games?

I have seen a few youtube clips and am intrigued, looks like the sort of old stlye rpg that I used to like.

I see it is being released on consoles first, they are porting it to PC for a later release.

Anyone played it or the first one?, is it any good?

Personally I loved Dark Souls, and can't wait for II to hit PC. It's all about the slow and deliberate combat system for me, and not really having anything spelled out for you. There are moments of genuine suspense, just because getting killed is much more meaningful than in a game like Skyrim.

I also loved the general ambience, mixing JRPG with Western RPG, and throwing in some horror. The way the armour shines unnaturally is one of my favourite visual elements in recent gaming history.

Be warned though. The game uses Games For Windows Live, which is being shut down soon, so it's still not entirely clear what they've done about that.

Have played the first one, and can say it's the first game ever to make me afraid to die in a game. Edging along a ledge, knowing one small misstep will end in a falling death doom moment... knowing that even if you get over the ledge, you've got at least 2 adversaries to deal with, both of which are probably better swordsman than you are, and all through that and more, you know it will be your fault, your lack of observation or lack of thinking or some other element that will be the reason you died.

Dark Souls has a reputation for being a difficult game. Dark Souls II from what I've seen seems to be even harder. Still that's a half-truth: Dark Souls is an unforgiving game, but it's never less than fair. The odds are stacked against you and the game's perils are multitudinous. As well as the cast of monsters, you've falling rocks, doorways that lead to sheer drops and other environmental hazards to deal with. If you want a good action packed and grim RPG these two games are it. They both will leave you cold and thinking, what the hell have I gotten myself into?

I hear Dark Souls II will be a little less linear now because you are able to teleport between discovered bonfires from the beginning of the game (something you were only able to do late into its predecessor). It gives you the impression that the game is more forgiving and the teleportation function allows you to extend your reach into the world on multiple fronts which is a good thing.

If you haven't played Dark Souls, I'd suggest you head over to Steam and get it. Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition for what it will give you is a bargain at £19.98 on the PC. (Get yourself a 360 controller if you haven't got one)

Did I not say it was dark? The bosses in these games ... well .... they will drag you to hell and back! It/they are classics games and deserve to be on any RPG fans hard drive. Enough said, go get them both.

Get the sequel, but personally I would wait until some PC reviews come out and won't be pre-ordering until I am absolutely certain they have properly optimised the game for PC, both graphically and the controls.

The PC port of Dark Souls was pretty uninspired, but at the end of the day gameplay is king, and it was still much better than a lot of games out there. If they put the game out at £30, I might pre-order it.

To be honest, I don't really see how the controls can be faulted in Dark Souls. They're perfect if you use a gamepad, and it's just not the kind of game that suits keyboard & mouse. There's not much they can really do about that.

A game is a game and the controls could have suited M/K if they had designed it that way in the first place. There are plenty of third person titles on PC that play perfectly well with M/K, its only shoddy or rushed ports that spoil things. Hopefully they will have done their homework this time around but I still won't pay a penny till I have seen someone do a PC review/first look and give it the thumbs up.

My experience of third person games on PC has been different... The last time I used that kind of 3rd person on keyboard and mouse was The Witcher, and I really found that horrible. The genre has just grown up around gamepads and plays better that way. I guess if keyboard and mouse support was particularly horrible then they could improve it. But knowing that it will always play best with gamepad anyway, it's not something that will put me off. Needless to say, I'd strongly recommend using a gamepad for the game!

The graphics thing was annoying, but quickly got fixed by the community, and the menu thing was annoying and never got fixed. I expect those to work better this time round, and I could live with it if not. The game was otherwise relatively un-buggy, so actually was a lot better than other games I've played. Also, at the end of the day, I'd rather support bad ports of great games than great ports of crap games.

Ive ordered it for the PS3, been watching some Twitchers from the USA (as it released there yesterday) and it looks good. :)

I played Dark Souls, and I really liked it, although I got stuck and distracted by other games. As other people have said, it is brutal, but fair. It was a shoddy pc port, but a fan fix got it up to 1080 p and 60 fps :)

DS II looks more accessible, but just as hard. There is a good quicklook available at

The thing about the difficulty is that it's mostly about how much you can grind your way up the levels. Sometimes you do have to farm an area for a bit before moving on to somewhere new.

It was delivered on Friday , so managed to spend some time on it over the weekend.

If there was one song that would be apt for this game, it would be 'stupid deaths' from horrible histories.

if there is a drop, I'm pretty sure I have rolled, jumped, or run straight off it!

Funny looking at other players bloodstains too, every cliff face or lengthy drop has a generous splattering of blood around it , when I click on them , I see most of them just run off it like they didnt know it was there.

Good game, am enjoying it a lot so far, the combat is very good.

They've only just recently come to my attention but I heard very good things about the first one and the sequel is highly anticipated.

I preordered on PC, and it finally became available last week. The port does a much better job than the first one, and is supposedly the best version, due to higher resolutions, smoother frame rates and shorter loading times.

There was a bit of trouble with getting it to work, but i managed to get it going. I fumbled around quite a bit to start with, but seem to new making decent progress now

Ive enjoyed this game to a point, but the only thing I don't like is that, as a sorcerer, I don't seem to have had much of a choice of gear up until now (I'm level 80 odd now) , I still have the starter staff and robes.

It seems most of the gear you find is for the melee types, I have only just found someone that sells new spells (Ive still been using the soul arrow spells).

The bosses are a challenge though, as a sorcerer I have needed help with some of them.

OP - Please see this video:

Pretty much what I expected being a console port. Hell, a PC game doesn't have A B and C buttons o_o. This guy doesn't pull the punches either :) ;)

I started watching his worth a buy videos after someone posted his x rebirth one on these forums. I generally like them, but have a very different opinion to him regarding this game. He's so upset about the game being optimized for acontroller that isn't keyboard and mouse... He can't like racing or flight games much!

This morning I had a bit of a breakthrough, finding out how to become human again (using human effigies rather than burning them in a bonfire). I've tried a number of different characters out, I think the one I've played the most gas 2-3 hours in so I'm not far in at all really

hehe yes, I did that the first time, there is a place where you can trade certain items for a chance of getting an effigy , let me know if you want me to tell you where it is.

I'm up to around lvl 80 sorcerer, but I want to try a knight style build, I miss using a sword and shield.

The problem with the sorcerer is that you really cannot take many hits, so everything is from range, I ve needed to get help for many of the bosses.
