Darker dark sides of planets

I don’t think this is a bug as such, but I’d like for the dark side if planets to be, well, darker...

As I approach a planet on the dark side it is almost pitch black, but then as I get closer to orbital cruise it lightens up quite a lot, then as I descend more it gets much lighter again. I should NEED to use the lights on my SRV on the dark side!

I’m using an Oculus Rift with the Gamma slider on step from the left.

-1 Totally against it.

It's a nice feature that dark side are lighten up. I remember the time when RES when it was completly dark made you crush again over and over again in front of an asteroid you just happen to see.

If you really wants that, there should be an opton in menu to choose what you prefer.

Some of them are dark, dark enough so you cant see the ground without ship or SRV lights, but due to the lighting model this does require special conditions. I have no issue with planets being dark, well except the first time when I was looking out waiting to see the ground as I landed and ended up smacking into it, and even after that I still couldn't see it. I limped 7kly with less than 30% hull, still it was funny afterwards, now I instrument land on dark planets, you soon learn.

Now FD has said they are working on the lighting model in 2.4 beyond, so fingers crossed. Indeed areas that would normally be dark should be dark. As for asteroid belts, that lighting model is broken as well when a red dwarf star can cast a shadow across it's own asteroid belt, I can handle it for now, still can't wait for the improved lighting model though.

I disagree. We are looking thru a hud, it darkens so we aren't blinded pulling up to a star, it brightens when we pull into a dark side of a moon. But I do feel it for those that want the option to keep it dark for pics and what not.

I'm all for it. The dark side of a planet shouldn't be any brighter than the integrated brightness of the sky above it. Then we could have cool landing spotlights and stuff on our ships, and a point in having headlights on our SRVs.

Or, you know, make the brightening effect adjustable so everyone can be happy. But that's crazy talk, I know. [haha]

Yea ok... But then how do you land on completly dark surface planet station ?

Your lights ain't going to help you cruise to it...

Your lights maybe not - but the station is usually brightly lit, you have a radar, altimeter and ground scanner (wish we could switch them manually...), and once you've requested docking, your pad shows its landing lights.

I guess for immersion it could be good then.

BUT there should be an option for it in graphism. Defenetly the casual gamer will want things to be eased.

Why can't people accept that the canopies are "active"?

[where is it]

But it only works on some planets and not in asteroid belts? :D

I would like to make it more fluid while still being playable. Right now it feels artificial and there are places on planets where it works like it should (your lights help a lot but you could still see something without them). There seems to be a sweetpoint for nights on planets that I sometimes encounter while landing, but it isn't the standard, 90% of planets have this strange bright nights syndrome. It's not only cool because it's dark, but because it makes for a great contrast, all the lights are more pronounced and the game looks better, the planetary stations really look great, when "the night is right". The current mechanic makes most of the things washed out during the night.

But they've said it's part of the coming changes, so fingers crossed.

Because the planet station buildings and pads have lights.

How do you imagine airplanes land at night nowadays?

Also, this:
