Newcomer / Intro Data Link Scanner

Do I need to put the Data Link Scanner in a fire group? To my knowledge the Data Link Scanner comes stock on every ship and doesn't take up a utility or option slot in outfitting. They are used to scan ships, nav beacon, etc. So is there a benefit for putting it in a fire group?

If you don't put it in a fire group, you won't be able to use it. Unlike a basic planet scan that works "automatically" when you're within range, the Data Link scanner doesn't work unless you 'fire ' it. One way to think of it, is that anything that shows up in the fire group tab as assignable, has to be assigned to be used.

Worth noting that the ship's data link scanner is really only used for a specific type of scan (currently to scan 'lost' ships that have a voice log). It isn't used to scan other ships or nav beacons, that is all handled by your basic ship's scanner.

If you want to use it, then yes, assign it to a trigger in a fire group, but it's not used much in current gameplay.

Hi, just to add that currently the Data Link Scanner on a ship is only used to download audio logs from selected Megaships. It's not the device that does "normal scans" on ships or Nav Beacons etc. This is handled by the slot based scanner as it always was before the DLS was fitted to every ship in update 2.3. However, some players have said they've successfully used it to scan surface data points in scanning missions, using a bit of fancy flying instead of an SRV. But apart from the Megaships (and fancy flying) there is no other use when in space as far as I know, although it wouldn't be a surprise if the devs have added some Thargoid connected use for 2.4!

That is not true - Chaff, Heatsinks and SCBs can all be fired off by hotkeys / button bindings without being in any fire-group whatsoever.

The issue I have with it is it can't be powered down in the modules tab and it always defaults to top priority (1) in the modules tab after dropping out of super cruise this means if you have a marginal build in terms of power when you deploy hard points stuff on lower priorities (2+) will shut down whenever I drop into an area now I go to the modules tab and reset it to lowest priority (5).

As I said above, at the moment the only uses are downloading audio logs from certain Megaships e.g a Generation ship and possibly flying close to ground level and carefully scanning data link points in scan missions. That's normally done in an SRV of course.

Now if you think about it the development team surely haven't added it to 2.3 just do very little in the long term. It probably took the same kind of effort to implement as the addition of planetary landing suites to every ship. They must have further plans for it and my guess is some kind of use in the unfolding 2.4 Thargoid story. If not, my other guess is from 2.5 there have been hints at a variety of core gameplay improvements including overhauling the mission system. Perhaps it might come more into use then.

I have noticed that if you have it assigned to a fire group then some NPC ships cause the scanners targeting symbol to appear on my HUD but currently closing to within 200 metres and using it produces nothing but I suspect there. Will be missions to acquire information from certain ships that way.

You seem to have covered most of my questions on this topic. At least it seems to have a function now, even if slightly obscure. If nothing else it will show me where i'm headed.
(i sometimes have trouble lining up on the slot.)but as has been suggested, there may be other uses to which it can put.The fact that it cannot be powered down and is installed in every ship without the option to disable it and with no reason given for its presence was my major concern. But there must be more too it.

Found out how to trigger it, close to wreckage site but perhaps it is a mission specific function, sometimes it works, other times not so good.Has to be set to a fire grooup
