Newcomer / Intro Data link scanner

On the surface - nope rocks don't have a data point so the data scanner has nowt to scan.

Whilst mining asteroids - maybe that lizard-type has tried? ;)

The data link scanner isn't used for any surface mining/exploring. It won't give you any idea of what's in the rocks you shoot. You'll find uses for it to scan data link ports on Mega Ships, some ground stations, etc., anywhere you find a "Data Link" identified. Sometimes you'll have to fly around a mega ship for a while to actually find the port so you can interrogate it with your scanner. Hope that helps a bit.
Regards

I thought so. But if it is no use, why is it possible in the first place? The scan starts and get completed all right...

Earlier on, somebody made an hypothesys that scanned rocks could yeld more minerals, something like when you use prospector limpets... But if it is not so, why the h...make you able to scan outcrops? What were Fdevs thinking?

Ah but your ship's data link scanner is now more capable - it can sweep a megaship for example to reveal "stuff". You can see this in the new trailer.

My topic was not on this.

It was about SRV data link scanner that allows you to uselessly scan rocks.

That is what I replied to in post #2 - there is no data link so it has nothing to scan - the scanner runs but there is nothing for it to interact with. I don't know if the scanner used to run pre "Beyond" - I never tried it. :)

I mentioned the asteroids in case you also meant that - sorry if it confused the issue.

Ok, you didn't originally mention the SRV data link scanner so I defaulted to the ship Data Link Scanner. The scanner in the SRV is used to scan data link antennas within ground stations or outposts on the planets. there are specific missions to scan them (private ports will normally be illegal, and public ports will be legal). They'll appear as a short round tower in which the middle portion will raise up when you get close enough. Once you get it to raise, you can lock the data port and scan it by holding down the appropriate fire button (whichever button you've assigned to it in your fire groups). You'll have to hold it for a few seconds and then you'll get a message that you've received some data. Normally these towers in outposts will be surrounded by a red square on you ground map. That tells you its normally an illegal (private) server and will be guarded by skimmers or defense turrets you'll have to deal with (scan and kill normally). The towers within cities will normally come in groups of 4 or more, and will have to be scanned within a certain time period (which will show on your screen and add time as you find/scan them). These city folks tend to get fairly hissy and will shoot you in a heartbeat if you don't get the scan done in time, so be prepared to run like the wind!! There are several other forum posts on how to handle these situations. Good luck!!\
