Wilst selling exploration data (whilst the "you are the first to discover" list was coming up) my game crashed - didn't get the frontier crash reporter just a "reporting to microsoft" thing from windows. Was wondering if anyone had had that happen to them and if they'd been able to work out if it means my tags/data has been lost?

This is somewhat speculative because I don't know exactly how the submission system works but if I understand it correctly, there are two stages when selling data. The first is initiated when you press "sell page" and instructs the server that you want to sell the page. The second is displaying your first discoveries while fetching from the server the next page to be sold in the background.
The first stage is simply an instruction to the server and since the scanned systems are held server-side it's an atomic operation that either succeeds or not. The second stage happens after you have already gotten the credits (and tags) for the discovery; you can cancel the display anyway without effect to the tags you received.
In short, I don't think you can lose data due to a crash.
I have often had my client CTD after selling large amounts of exploration data - I've lost count of the number of times I've sent big reports - but I've never lost exploration data directly from a crash.

Always crashes on me after selling 3-4 pages. You didn't lose anything.
Unless your ship has been destroyed you don't lose it. Despite "crashes" in game.
FD will be able to absolutely ascertain this.
I'm going with this.
My Laptop is ultra crashy with Elite, sometimes 5 crashes an hour, sometimes none. It's crashed when swapping Engineered modules around pre-storage, crashed when selling data. In fact it's crashed at every conceivable 'worst possible moment'. And I've never lost a single thing!
FD, you can criticise them for a lot of things (most unjustified) but game data security IMO is rock solid.
