Anyone else having trouble finding these now on wake scans? Can't find ANY, and I swear the 3 I did have disappeared from my Data banks. WTH?
Ah and before this starts again:
Blah blah....continue normal playing...blah blah...you make the grind....blah blah
I've NEVER equipped a wake scanner to scan someones wake during my normal play session. Never needed, waste of a utility slot, never will do, never have the time to even think about it. why the hell should i do this? I get nothing from it, just the hope for mats get smashed with every scan

I said the heck with it, went to Palin, took my one allotted roll for DD, got a 130.5% multiplier on an unmodded module, did my one roll at Dweller, similar great result.
See here:
Farming-Datamined-Wake-Exceptions
Use method 1, scan the nav beacon in the system to find the distribution centre if it's not obvious.
I got 8 in an hour or so. It's fast because you can almost sit still and continuously scan new wakes.
When you're done give GieNkoV some rep.

Exactly ^^
Having farmed a few over the last weeks, I did notice a large decrease in DWE drops since around the patch balancing long range smuggling missions, since approximately a week ago
You still get them, but it is now harder than it used to be. I patiently sits in a distribution centre looking at all those hungry sidewinder pilots getting some food for their families. Something definitely changed here recently so you are not dreaming
So the distribution center is listed in the list of locations on the left panel? When I go to a famine system?
This is the where the frustration comes in, the initial method is to scan wakes, right? I did the same as the OP did, I went to a variety of stations, also scanned innumerable ships and I got nada, zilch, squat. So I quit looking for them. I have 13 of them sitting in my storage that came from all sorts of sources, USS, couple from ship scans while just flying around. The actual discovery of items varies from CMNDR to CMNDR while doing what appears to be the same action. When I quit looking for them, there they were.
You just have to keep the frustration at bay, easy to say, hard to do. That's why many say, just play the game, but that it is not what someone like the OP want to hear because they have THAT goal in focus and want to complete it. The game is playing you if you let it; if you run into a roadblock, outflank it, take another tack, that is what I've started to do.
I needed to gather a few cracked industrial firmware to finish the mods for my Exploraconda (I am about 6kly into Sag A* right now), had only two for two mods, lvl 5's DD Thruster and Charge Enhanced PD. Could not find any more. I said the heck with it, went to Palin, took my one allotted roll for DD, got a 130.5% multiplier on an unmodded module, did my one roll at Dweller, similar great result.
The game is rewarding as it is cruel.
Not saying that you are wrong, but a videogame should not be like this.
It puts goals behind walls of grind and dice rolls, and if you are unlucky and pass several hours or days without finding what you are looking for, you feel stranded from your goal. Then maybe eventually you find some mats, and got a crap dice roll. Then you come to the forums, and you are suggested to "play the game". You are said that you are making the grind. That you are played by the game.
To aggravate all of this, there's no skill involved, it's all about time sinks and luck, performing repetitive and not fun tasks like scanning wakes.
There's a balance between realism, challenge and FUN. Elite fails hard in stricking this balance.
I'm honestly puzzled by these game design decision. I'm starting to think that real life is more fun and less harsh than Elite.
I have to disagree that there's no skill involved. There are people that can consistently find what they want (Exquisite Focus Crystals notwithstanding) and people who can't. What's the difference? It's not luck. The skill is not pew-pew skill but it's still skill.
I do agree that the design is off though.
If you make it hard to find mats, you should get rewarded by getting what you need when you cash it in. Some variance in the product is good because it makes ships different but getting a G5 roll that's no better than a G3 or has such a bad negative effect that it's unusable is poor design.
If you're going to give us such poor results then mats should be easy to get.
The double whammy of hard to find and bad results is not good.
