The can be acquired by scanning wakes outside stations.

Head to an outbreak system and look for a distribution centre. There will be lots of ships jumping in and out, so you can scan their wakes.

The Jameson crash site is apparently a good source - you get other stuff and trade it for DWEs.

You can also get them as mission rewards.

how do you get these? Titan Drives are easier to find.

Come shoot some pirates. Every ship you target gives a chance of data. It works out about one data for every two ships targeted, so while you get your 500 mil/hr from the pirate massacre missions, you get all the data you need. I can't remember if DWE comes directly, but you can trade it anyway, plus you get all the high grade mission reward data too.

Reposting this. Already applies if you're pledged, even at rank zero (ie. Carrier security won't shoot you even with your hard points up in a no-fire zone).

Missions are a good source. It helps if you have good reputation with the faction (preferably all the factions) at a station as they offer higher value rewards if you're allied. If you get the right mission, the reward can be 20 datamined wake exceptions. I use missions to keep my stocks topped up.

Alternatively, you can find one of the data harvesting POIs, such as Jameson's Cobra at HIP 12099 1B, and cross-trade the G5 data you get (adaptive encryptors capture, IIRC). Obviously, the materials traders are sharks and the trade rate is poor, but it's a reproducible, reliable way to get the data you need.

If you're going wake scanning, G5 Long Range is a great mod. Range goes up from 4km to 8.8km, so you don't have to fly around nearly as much.

• scan wakes with a Frame Shift Wake Scanner, better in high traffic areas such as station in "Famine Status" systems
• from 18.08 missions provide a high amount of mats reward, but rewards are randomized and you have to find the right mission for mats you need
• Jameson Crash Site (HIP12099 1B) now have 9 point to scan, so you can stock up Adaptive Encryptors Capture (5) and Atypical Encryption Archives (4) in one run (no relog needed), then exchange for what you need at a Material Trader (ex. Datamined Wake Exceptions), nearest Encoded Trader from HIP 12099 is at Gateway in Diaguandri system.
