Dav’s Hope standard for VR performance

I am seeing a large performance drop off after December update in VR and hearing all kinds of different reports, it can be confusing to try and figure out just what in going on. I am going crazy trying to figure out why suddenly I am getting such bad VR performance, my Computer, Vive seem to be working properly, Drivers all current. For the last 1 1/2 years Elite Dangerous in VR was amazing no matter where I was or what I did, absolutely had no performance issues, no visible distortion, blurring, stuttering or ghosting anywhere. Now everywhere I am having performance issues, Frame drop offs, Stuttering, ghosting some areas worse than others, Dav’s Hope being the worst.

I am thinking there needs to be a standard way to check VR performance and VR settings so that we all can easily compare our results. Most know about Dav’s Hope, it’s easy to get to and I found Dav’s Hope to be good for experimenting with StermVR and ED settings because it’s easy to see the changes. When driving around Dav’s Hope I am seeing ghosting of locked on material item’s lettering and srv’s target hud also buildings will blur. I tried several different configurations in SteamVR and ED without any success, it’s still so bad.

I am having a difficult time in VR now knowing how great VR in ED was before December and now it seems totally broken. There has been a couple of bug reports about VR performance but haven’t seen any official response. At least they could acknowledge a problem and say they are working on it but I afraid Fdev is setting a low priority for VR users.

I am would like to hear what others are seeing now, I am so confused is it ED or do I have some other problem.

Curious... Because for me it's totally the opposite. I have a Rift and a GTX1070, I play with SS x1 and HMD Quality x1.5 and since the last update, I have a massive gain of performance.

I think the engine uses much more the GPU now.

What is your GC?

Came to the forum tonight to see if anyone else was struggling with this, I too am having so much trouble with VR performance after this update. I played the beta and I don't remember it being this bad. I've always run settings somewhere between VR High and VR Ultra no problem, and now I'm getting stuttering and frequent drops to 45fps all over the place at VR High. Tonight I'm getting stuttering at the star after every jump.

What makes it particularly frustrating is that my GPU utilization is constantly low (30-50%) and CPU hovers around 50%. I can't seem to change this no matter what I do with the settings. My drivers are up to date, everything's been updated, I've tried out changing Nvidia settings somewhat, I can't get it to change. Prior to the update my GPU utilization was normal, usually around 70-90%. I was starting to wonder if this was an Oculus thing given that their updates are notorious for being less than stable, but it seems like it's happening to Vive users as well? I am on a 1070TI, i7 4770k.

YES I just started seeing stuttering when flying past stars or spaceports also, I seems to be getting worse. When you have some time stop by Dav's Hope and report your findings.
I think this is a common problem, I don't get why more aren't reporting poor performance.
That's the only way Fdev will Take this seriously.

Most actually experience a significant improvement with current version over last, apart from the server hiccups.
That's why nobody is up in arms.

stuttering on stars could easily be a few textures or shaders gone wonky.

I would suggest checking drivers, recalculating shader cache and removing extraneous software.
Elite also has a long history of botching the patch process, stuttering is a big sign of that and I would of the recommend to completely wipe the game completely
Take a backup of your binds file and also delete the folder in appdata.

Yep I too am getting really bad performance in Res site mainly now. Upgrading cpu and mobo tomorrow! From 2700k to something nicer ;)

I think I figured out the problem for my setup. I moved my Elite Dangerous install to a different hard drive. I'm now seeing "normal" GPU utilization (when not limited by ASW). So it seems my install might have been bottle necked by the drive. Something to check. I'm still looking at a CPU upgrade, but at least I figured out the cause of the GPU being underutilized.

Also, if you haven't already done so, I HIGHLY suggest updating the GPU drivers to the most recent. I've seen massive improvements in performance since the 3.3 update AND new drivers.

*Edit* Sorry, just skimmed one of your earlier posts. See now that you've already done that.
