Newcomer / Intro Day 1, I'm confused, sadly.

Hello community,

This is my first ever flight / space game which i've played. i bought a Hotas X joystick ages ago to use to fly heli's in arma 3 but i ended up sticking with keyboard/mouse.

It's a steep learning curve for me sorry. I'm pretty poor at space combat and to be frank, and i'm really wanting to understand the economy dynamics, factions and everything non combat.

I've completed the tutorials and i have a VERY basic grasp of the game. I've managed to complete 2 delivery missions after searching the bulletin boards at docking stations for a few hours - i have 10k now and i have an Eagle ship which i apparently get free as a pre-order ... somewhere which i don't know how to find - i digress.

Is there a tutorial on how to improve delivery mission rewards, upgrading your space ship, mining, sockmarkets etc.... - this side of the game appeals to me more than combat.

I find that my lack of knowledge is playing a big part of the frustration, but it is part of the journey so any help appreciated - i'm off to watch some youtube videos if i can find any on the above subjects, please reply if you dont mind helping a complete n00b out.

Edit: What is the criteria for uploading screenshots/images?

Hi

The game is pretty complex (and big), and I guess there is no 'right' way to play it. Because the trading part of the game is dynamic, meaning that players change the demand and supply of goods in different systems and even in different stations it can be hard to find profitable routes. I basically put together a spreadsheet showing what was available in systems that I'm playing in, and that has helped a bit, but I am by no means a trader, preferring to take delivery or request missions, and that seems to have worked OK for me so far (I've been playing about three weeks now). As far as your extra Eagle goes, you can find it by going to a shipyard and looking under the Ship Locations tab, and it should tell you where it is, and I don't know if it's still there, but in the Galaxy Map, the system where it resides should have a little red ship icon next to it.

Good luck and enjoy the game. It's a long learning curve.

Hey Hitt0r!

Don't worry too much - seriously this game takes a bit to grasp - I have been playing for a while and there is still so much to learn (which I think is great!). Most of my learning came from the Pilot's guide (see the Documentation thread in this Forum Section) and YouTube.

I recommend getting used to the HOTAS setup - although it takes a bit to get a hang of, it is far superior to M&Kb. I have come from years of Shooters so it was a jump for me, but will not go back now!

As far as factions and economy, by far I have only a little knowledge - to improve your reward on such missions, you need a faction to like/trust you. This means doing heaps of missions for that faction until your standing with them improves. Then you get the big jobs. I have only just now started doing trading after Bounty Hunting (trading gives more money faster), and although the faction still considers me neutral I have started to be offered $10K+ jobs for transporting. It will take a while to get a hang of.

When it comes to finding your Eagle, go to a Station that has a Shipyard and open it up. Up the top right will be a Stored Ships section. In there will be any stored ships you have and the System in which they are located. Right down the name and then go to the Galaxy Map and search for that System - you will see a ship-like icon above it (indicating you have a ship stored there). Go to the system view of that system (this show all the systems plates etc) and look for the same ship-like icon - that is the station in which it is stored :)

All I can say if read the pilots guide, and watch YouTube. Take notes and then have fun, the rest will come with time. :)

Edit: One more thing - you may also get missions to Donate things (like food or medical supplies). Don't ignore these as I used to, they often help you gain rep with the faction, and can usually be pretty cheap (ie 3 units of Algae). Some may be more expensive but will give you rank (had to supply 7 non-lethal weapons, cos a bit but bumped me to recruit.) It can turn into an investment. Be aware though, getting good with one faction may impact your standing with another faction. Be goddamned if I can figure that all out but!

i'll take a look at the pilots guide - thank you both for responding. i'll try and find this ship yard also.

One thing which bugs me about the game - Your spaceship can travel faster than light and break the laws of physics as we know them, but when you select a delivery mission, there is no auto satnav route, i find im back to the old pen and paper writing down the star system and space station names then searching for them manually in the navigation of the UI menu. - give me my god damn satnav! :)

Thanks again

Hit.

if you go to the galaxy map, tab to 'navigation (located at the top of the map on the left side) type in the system you'd like to travel to, the pointer should move and hover at the system you typed in the box. move your mouse to it and click on the 2nd button (plot route) this will plot the route for you so you do not have to manually plot it.

have fun cmdr

No need to write them down, you can view your current missions in the Transactions tab of the left hand UI panel. You still need to find the systems but at least the info is there.

you should find missions you've accepted under the left hand screen in the Transactions tab.
They usually list which star system they are about and the reward and the timer.
Also on the Galaxy Map, a globe type circle icon appears in systems where you have a mission (say a delivery or a hunt a renowned pirate).
There is also a plot route button but bear in mind it can only plot as far as you can jump (Sidewinder starter ship = 7-8LY with std loadout).
As you lighten the ship or upgrade components, this can increase/decrease which also affects your plot route and the network of jumpable stars in the galaxy map.
The larger ships with best components/modules can easily jump 25LY. Note that we all start somewhere in the Western Spiral Arm of the Milky Way galaxy (probably sector ZZ9PluralZAlpha). As you move coreward up the arm or to the centre, it gets more dense so you don't have to jump as far. But I don't believe the populated Empire and Federation worlds extend coreward very much.

i'll try and find this ship yard also.

You've probably already located it and figured this out, but the Shipyard is an option on the Station Services menu. However I'm pretty sure it's only available on actual stations - outposts generally don't (or never?) have them.

Good luck!
