Hello fellow commanders -

I have played a few sessions now. I mostly have done small runs. I have upgraded most of my sidewinder parts. I can now haul 6 tonnes. OH YEAH! I have probably earned >250K credits. but who know since it's always going back into the ship for upgrades, fuel, or repairs. Dont worry I always have >3X my rebuy.

I know this will jinx me but I have not died yet. I have only been in two conflicts. I ran from one and fought the other off to earn 1000 credits.

Right now I am in a loop near one of the Community Goals. I take a mission away from there. Then on the way back stop somewhere and pick up stuff for the CG and return. Then Repeat.

I am having fun. It's a bit grindy but I like games like this. I pretty much dont see anything each game session except menus, stations and Super cruise lines.

I have a couple more questions:

1 - I only have the base game. I think there is an expansion called Horizons. Is that worth it? What is it? I think I want to fully explore the game without it first then buy it. Does that make sense?

I guess part of this question is what do I know what I am missing? I can see 3 types of missions
A - Take this from here to there.
B - Go get that and bring it here.
C - Go kill this guy and return here.
So I can do those. Or outfit for mining Or Explore, Or Bounty hunt. What things to do Horizons add?

2 - One of the stations that I visit had floating read skulls over the station. Like the mark of Voldemort except red. it was pretty ominous. Should I stay away from that?

Also there seem to be lots of conflict going on within the lore. Should I really be worried about this? Will running guns for one faction off another and do I care long term?

As always thank you for your time.

First, let me welcome you to the Elite: Dangerous Galaxy. My rule 2 is; Have Fun (it is just a game, but WHAT a GAME!).

The learning curve is so steep that the mountain goats go around in teams, roped together (and even then they may fall off, but that means the Vultures get to eat!). However, when you master something, and do it well, the buzz is worth the effort.

Now, Rule 1, which is; Never Fly if you cannot cover the REBUY. REBUY is the insurance excess on your ship, and is 5% of the value of your ship (including all upgrades, but not the cargo). If you get killed, and you can cover the REBUY, you will get a replacement ship identical to the one you lost. However, if you cannot cover the REBUY you may well end up back in a basic Sidewinder. Please do not let this happen to you, as the forum is littered with tales of woe when other Players have ignored Rule 1, and then got killed. This links to the latest I have seen;

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showth...a-year-of-work

When you decide to buy a new ship, try to have 200% of the purchase price first. That way you have enough for the ship, some basic outfitting, a couple of loads of cargo, and a couple of REBUYs (just in case). If you are trading in a ship, take it back to factory spec first. When you sell any ship you will always take a 10% hit on the value of the ship at the time of selling. However, if you take it back to factory spec first you get back the full amount that you paid for the upgrades (at this time, at least). Then, when you sell the ship, your losses will be reduced. For example, I have an A Rated Cobra MkIII worth 10Mcr. If I were to sell her now I would take a loss of 1Mcr. However, if I take her back to factory spec and then sell her my loss will be about 35Kcr.

While I have Horizons (actually, I have the Lifetime Expansion Pass, which means I will get all DLCs from now on), I cannot say if it is worth the money, as I cannot say if YOU will enjoy it (I do). I would suggest you carry on as you are, getting used to the core Game, and see how you progress. I would also suggest that you wait until December, as then the next Season DLC should become available, and this should have Horizons built into it.

Have fun, fly safely, and see you out amongst the stars. Feel free to ask any questions, we all had to learn somewhere, and those that care will answer all they can.

Hello, commander. Looks like your comms finally came through.

So to your questions:
1) Does make perfect sense. Give it a couple (hundreds) hours and if you find out Elite is a game for you, buy the expansion. It's really worth it.
Horizons lets you land on every planet and moon that doesn't have an atmosphere (so about 60% of all bodies in game). You can buy an SRV to drive around the planets, do bigger variety of missions that in one way or another involve surface interaction (base assaults are great fun), trade with commodities that only appear on surface, you can get access to Engineers, with whom you can tweak and enhance basically every part of your ship up to ridiculous levels, in three weeks we'll have even bigger update coming up with ship-launched fighters, so speaking for myself, hell yeah it's worth it. It really at least doubles to fun you can have in the game.

2) It means it's a pirate station. :)
So whether you want to stay away for that is up to you. But you can usually find cool things there, like black market, where you can sell things you normally can't sell via the commodity markets (stolen and illegal things you can find on your travels)
Also these stations sometimes have their own "jurisdiction" (or lack thereof) so you don't have to worry about cops when docking there, even if you are wanted in the system

3) Lore and all the stories going on in game are awesome. If you should worry about it is really up to you. I personally enjoy that stuff and it adds loads of fun into the game. If you want to focus on your progression, first, you can, of course, catch up with this stuff later. But you can at least skim through the Gal Net, from time to time if you are interested.
Much of the stuff that's happening is player-driven so you can get more involved, later, if you want. :)

Fly safe, commander! o7

1. You don't need Horizons to enjoy Elite Dangerous - but - if you decide to play in OPEN PLAY then any commanders that you engage in combat with might (read probably will) have "Engineer" modifications to their ship, weapons and systems which will mean you are at a great disadvantage. You can only interact with the "Engineers" if you have Horizons season pass. As long as you don't get involved in any PvP combat you will be OK, modified NPCs will only occur at the highest ranks (which should never happen at all in my opinion) so you won't need to worry about them in PvE.

2. As Chris says these are stations which have a pirate group as their controlling faction (although I have come across some where the controlling faction has changed but the skull is still there) - in any event, you need not worry about docking there, in fact you might want to go to one of these is you have illegal goods you want to sell in a black market.

Welcome and enjoy yourself.

Hi, and welcome.

1) Yes, it's worth it - for me. If it's worth it for you, you'll have to decide for yourself.
However - "fully explore the game" .... Nobody has yet fully explored the game. And probably nobody will, ever.

What Horizons adds is everything to do with planeary surfaces. Which includes planetary stations, missions only possible on planetary surfaces (kill this, fetch that, find something), stuff to find on the planet which you can then use to improve the performance of some ship components (better ammo, farther FSD jumps) and Engineers to improve the performance of your ship. Which gets you into the problem of PvP combat: basically everyone engaging in PvP is always discussing about these Engineers upgrades and which upgrades give you the best advantages.

And pretty pictures, and background for some stupid stunts:

2) Pirate station, usually has a black market. No reason to stay away, every reason to visit if you need to sell something you really shouldn't have in your hold.

3) Running guns (or any non-combat missions) for one faction won't really influence your standing with a different faction. The only thing that really offends them is if you shoot their ships. But doing missions for one faction can/will change the balance of influence (INF in the mission description) in a system. Do enough of it, and you can flip the power in one system towards a different faction. Whether you care about that is up to you. However, doing missions will also change your reputation with that faction, and this in turn will influence what type and grade of missions you are offered and, for factions allied with either Feds or Imperials, change your reputation with either of these, which in turn can lead to your ascension in the corresponding auxiliary navies, getting you access to faction specific ships.

Another safeguard regarding insurance/rebuy is to hang on to an upgraded ship when purchasing a new one. For example, my ship buying went as follows:

Sidewinder -> Hauler -> Eagle -> Cobra III -> Viper III -> T6 -> Vulture -> T7 -> T9

I A-rated mostly everything and, apart from the traders (Hauler and T6/7/9) I kept the previous ship before buying the next. Obviously, this is more expensive (as you have to save ALL the credits before you can buy/equip the next ship. However, it does mean that you can jump into a different ship when you want to try something else for a while. This will become even easier, once 2.2 is live and ship transfer is available to all.

There is a new release coming soon with content needing you to have Horizons to acquire it.

Rembember that although there are some things in the game that require missions to unlock or rank up they are otherwise not an essential part of play. There are ways of earning big bonuses in all aspects of the game (CGs), there are rare items trading loops etc. and these all come with the advantage of not coming with NPCs specifically programmed to stop you carrying out your mission.

Thank you for all the replies.

Are the peoples on this forum mostly in the UK? I was wondering why it was not that active.

I like the idea of not selling your previous ship. Always have an extra ship around. This game has no real concept of home base. right? We are all constantly on the move.

I think I will wait for my CG to pay off. Then buy a ship to try minning. Then maybe buy Horizons.

Not that active on this Newcomers subforum or the whole forum site?
if you select 'Quick Links' at the top of this screen and 'Today's posts' currently there are around 5 new posts per minute.

I have been looking a bit at the non-Horizons part of the update - in the 1.7 beta - it is called "1.7 - Passengers" and there is a lot of neat changes, the stations are amazing for example. The only downer appears to be the fact that the mega-liner the Beluga is locked to Horizons only.

(The 2.2 update is called "Guardians" - so maybe non-Horizons players will not meet any aliens yet? )

2.2 is called Guardians because of the ship-launched fighters.

Aliens don't exist. ;)
