DBS: Rail gun / cannon mix

I'm using mine as an armed scout, shieldless of course.

I have two options:

  • Class 2 railguns, class 1 cannon
  • class 1 railguns, class 2 cannon

I know that cannon have no size penalty against larger ships, would the first option be best as a fun ship with teeth? Or do you think small rail guns will do the job alongside MASSIVE CANNONS WAHEY?
Fixed weapons are all I want to use on this, it's basically to practise my aim and to kill as much as possible.
I just want your thoughts, really. This is my fly-around-the-bubble-causing-havoc-and-having-a-giggle ship

Tried a mix of small rails and medium cannon. Rails are pretty good and it turns out I'm quite a good shot, which is handy.
The cannons hit like a freight train, but I'm rubbish with them.

Brilliant fun though, even if I do have to head back to reload after every kill

I have found mixing rail sizes to be a bad idea as they charge at diferent rates so you have to work that bit harder to land both shots. Thogh with practice any thing can be masterd I guess :)

Railguns and cannons? Gross!

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, my response:

class 1 rails with class 2 cannons because you'll get closer convergence with the rails. But why cannons instead of the famed medium multi-cannon?

Because multis aren't as effective against larger ships. Cannon don't have a size penalty. Plus they make a glorious noise when they hit

What if you rail gun right side and cannon the left. A class 1 and 2 of each?

I have yet to lose my railgun cherry (well I've been on the receiving end, but you know what I mean).

But I AM a big fan of Left <> Right configurations.

My Cobra is fixed beams on one side (two sizes) and gimballed cannons on the other.

The beams take down shields, and the gimbals on the cannons mean I get good shots on subsystems.

Having one Gimballed weapon in the mix helps with wing undermining.
I can get a 'tag' in as fast as the experts, even though I'm not even up to FAOff combat.

Cannons have a big drawback when you mix sizes:
Projectile speed.
The c1 cannons lack a lot of punch to my taste,
so i'd say c1 rails as the "scalpel" to surgical strike ships at high distances and
hit modules at medium range for effect.
The c2 cannons are a good choice if you want them to be gimballed,
as you can turn a lot with the DBS and have some aim assist for juicy module hits.

I've been thinking about this, and it seems silly not to be using gimballed cannon. I can hit my target with fixed but module sniping is another matter.
I'll try some things tonight
