Dead Thargoid - Anyone Else Seen This?

Hi guys,

Last night, whilst enroute to Maia, I was interdicted by a Thargoid. It started off similar to the video we've all seen, where the Hyperspace conduit fails.

Then, as per usual, my systems shut down, the cabin frosts over...but no Thargoid appeared. My systems came back on quickly and I saw a radar blip, which I followed and found what, to all intents and purposes, appeared to be a dead Thargoid vessel floating in space.

There were no lights on, it didn't scan me, and it didn't respond to me scanning with my Discovery scanner. When I scanned it, I got the usual garble of numbers, but it didn't show either the green or red lights that we've seen on their ships in the past.

Most strangely of all, it always stayed roughly 500m away. I could boost closer (as can be seen in the screenshot) but when my thrust died down, it would "rubber band" back to 500m away. It was very odd - I poked around for about 15 minutes but nothing else happened. I wasn't armed so I couldn't prod it with a laser to see if it fired back ;)

Anyone else seen anything like this?

It's funny how shooting someone in a game is prodding. But in real life it's attempted murder. I love semantics!

Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing. I wonder what would have happened had you fired om it, would it wake up?

Also, I have to ask, what are all those Heat Sinks for on the DBX?? That ship can take a ton of heat, it doesn't need any Heat Sinks unless you are going star diving for the thrills or using the Neutron highway

I'm not that brave!

When I first built it I had a grand plan of using the Neutron Highway, but never did - I've just kept them around :)

So are you saying you woke up an apparently "Dead" Thargoid flowership?
Or are you referring to an alive and active ship?

Was interdicted/hyperdicted and was greeted with the image you posted greyed out thargoid ship, flew around it and accidentally bumped it, turned orange and proceeded to kill me...

The "rubber banding" makes it sound like an instancing bug rather than a new behavior.

Not in my experience, it follows you around, as soon as you deploy your weapons you get the warning that "it" is deploying hardpoints too.
I didn't provoke it any further because I had only 36% hull left.
I was hyperdicted by this troll Goid after I highwaked out of an attack by a Goid that I just probed with a research limpet, they seem to get pretty wound up when you do that.

it's not a bug...rubber banding is when the game decides that you didn't move when you did. It stayed with them the entire time without bouncing back and forth.

Anyways, this is not new. There are many videos of this same behavior even when they aren't hyperdicted. They just follow and keep pace.

And the ship isn't dead. If someone was dead it wouldn't be able to keep pace with you...the question you should be asking is why this specific behavior is being exhibited. FD coded them to do this for a specific reason.

I got "no thargoid" just recently. I had Guardians cargo in the hold as well as a Thargoid Probe and some meta alloys. I got hyperdicted though which was bad news. Noticed I still had some control of my ship though so I boosted off as much as I could. The EMP ship still managed to hit me, but then that flew off, and no other ship was present.

That's what I've been thinking about, but can't test for myself. Are they just observing? Or waiting for something... Do they react to dropped pods/Guardian artefacts/Thargoid tech? If it's an intended behavior, (and I hope it is, because it's just such an eerie and alien feeling behavior) and not a bug, then there's a very specific reason they come and find you, drag you out of hyperspace, and then silently stare you down head-on only a few paces away from you until you leave. Maybe we can't instantly understand why, as they're aliens, and this could be anything from saying hello, to them worshipping you as a god, lol. They might be scanning you and your tech for reasearch, observing your behavior in an attempt to understand you, or maybe not even you. Maybe they're interested in the microbial enviroment of your ship? Who knows!

These are not dead or comatose. This happened to me. There were actually two ships. One EMP'd me and waked out, the other one flew up and stared at me with its lights off like that one. The EMP didn't cause it to look dead, it already looked that way. It will just stay approximately 509m away unless you provoke it. It'll attack then.

I don't know what they are doing, but they aren't dead or asleep.

I had the same situation on my first-ever hyperdiction, just after the patch. I thought it was bugged because to me it did look dead, and the fact that it stayed at exactly the same distance no matter what direction I went looked like a bug to me. No particle trails, no animations, nothing. The other space daffodil high-waked out as normal and I could scan its wake and all.
