General / Off-Topic Dealing with the police can be... frustrating.

Was taking the dog for a walk last night when I stumbled across (quite literally, in the dark) a petrol-strimmer and a generator lying on the path just outside my back garden.

It's not the nicest of areas so I figured that if they weren't already stolen, they probably would be if they stayed there.
I brought them inside with the intention of either talking to the neighbours about them or (more likely) handing them over to the police.

It turned out I wasn't wrong.

This morning, while I was out, the cops showed-up to arrest one of my neighbours for burglary.
When I got in I phoned the cops and told them I'd heard somebody'd been arrested for burglary and that I'd found a strimmer and a generator which they might be interested in, related to that burglary.
I hear the sound of typing and then get told "Nah, there's no record of anybody reporting a strimmer or a generator stolen"
Seriously?
You've just arrested somebody for burglary, I phone you to tell you I found this stuff and you don't think there might be any link, or that they might be stolen?

Maybe I'm just being optimistic but I would have thought it'd be worth trying to figure out where these things came from in case there was CCTV showing them being stolen, thus helping the police with their case.
I guess that might take some effort, though.

😕

There's an old(er) guy who lives near me who, for some reason, seems to enjoy the company of the local scumbags.
He buys them booze, buys them cigarettes and orders food for them while they hang around, turning his cottage into a poophole and littering his garden with wrecked motorbikes and domestic appliances.
You get the picture, I'm sure.

So, it turns out that he's claiming to own all the stuff this one, particular, scumbag was arrested for stealing - as well as the strimmer and generator I found.
Apparently he "lent" all this stuff to the scumbag (A TV, digibox, stereo, laptop etc) and so no burglary was committed and the scumbag was released.

So, ever the dutiful citizen, I returned his generator and strimmer to him, as well.

I hope he knows what he's doing because it seems like if he carries on "lending" stuff to these scumbags, he's going to end up penniless and with no possessions.
Alternatively, if his ownership of these items is called into question, he's looking at being charged as an accomplice.

Anyway, not my problem any more. 🤷‍♂️

Some years ago I was strolling home from a concert with a girlfriend, when we saw an unconscious young guy lying on the pavement. Called an ambulance, but was transferred to the police. After calling them several times for almost an hour, they suggested that we could try and carry the guy to the police station, and when I then got angry, I was told to mind my manners. Five minutes later the ambulance showed up, and the paramediciners told us that the guy would have been dead in 20 minutes. Later I wrote an article about it, and received a telephone call from the head of the Emergency dispatch center, asking details, sincerely apologizing and promissing to deal with the case. He was fired half a year later.

That's....

terrible. And somewhat unsurprising, unfortunately... 😐

Look folks, I think you're being a bit harsh on the 'Thin Blue Line'. The Police are snowed under with their work load. Have you any idea how many tweets get posted every minute, and that's not including FaceBook and YouTube? Sifting through those for offensive comments is no mean task.

Police is corrupt as nuts in Mexico, I personally have a friend who smokes weed but that's illegal here. Anyways, police sometimes chase him for that though most times he is not caught, however, when he is caught he can just give some of the stuff to the officer that caught him and they'll leave.
Bribing them to avoid penalties for driving infractions is super common.

In short, I don't trust police for good reasons.

Honestly, the fact that you are overworked/underfunded/screwed over by your bosses/..., while definitely an acceptable reason for not doing your work right, is NOT a reason for me to NOT complain about your work results.
(just to be clear, I don't mean you in particular. Just a nebulous "you" representing whichever person it relates to)

When I'm a waiter who doesn't serve a customer in time because there are too many customers in the restaurant, the customers have a right to complain. Yes, I may be overworked or the restaurant may be understaffed, but that is not the customer's problem, is it.

And so while we do understand why police or emergency is not doing their job well, we are still going to be harsh. That's just how it works.

Police in South American countries are often linked with local mafias.

So after moving to Sweden a little under 3 years ago I have seen the Police as in on the beat and going past in cars about 10 times.( but then I do live in a very small town)

When my brother lived in Catford (South London) we once counted 17 cars going by in one hour.

I got put off a life of crime when i was 7 and visted my dad in HMP Dartmoor.

I dont bother the Police thus they dont bother me.

It was meant as a joke, highlighting the Police's inactivity when it comes to crimes that financially/physically/psychologically damage lives in the real world, as opposed to their eagerness to pounce on anyone that is perceived as guilty of (insert 'ism') according to comments made in the digital world. They must have to drink drink a lot of coffee o_O, and that's tax money well spent.

Where I live it's quite apparent emergency services are eager to do something. I was in a pub once, and some thoroughly drunk gentleman was going a bit wild. That's just normal Friday night. So bartender just called cops to come and take him outside. I'm serious - 4 police cars and an ambulance arrived to deal with a guy who was having a bit of a good time in an exuberant fashion :)

One of the reasons why I left NY and now enjoying life at Pennsylvania.

London ceased the stop and search and now it has become a warzone. Congolese and Somali gangsters came over to the UK with a brutal modus operandi. This forced the native London gangsters to step up to the violence and here we are. London is not safe. Moped gangs and knife crime is off the charts.

Fortunately the London gangsters are still here to limit the damage since the police do nothing.

\o/ for the London gangsters. We must beware of Congolese and Somali gangsters.

:)

Both sides of the same coin.

I'd take gang violence over state intrusion into privacy, or restrictions on freedom of movement, any day and I've lived in the bad parts of areas that see more violent crime in a month than London does in a year.
