By the year 3300, I expect several dozen fake monoliths have been placed all over the solar system by fans of the book/movie.
For Christmas I would like: 1) Receive my physical DRM-free premium boxed collector's edition of "Elite: Dangerous" --- 2) Walking around the spaceship --- 3) planetary landings --- 4) Have 7 years old for to believe still to the Santa Claus

tbh I didn't have avatars in mind when posting the third pic.
I just love the layout of the cockpit the film designers just nailed the right look, it has features and fixtures more akin to a executive craft, say a Lear Jet in today's parlance. Even the docking display I prefer to the current in game one (the landing pad one). I also like the 'retro look' flat panel displays, 3D holographics have their place but they are not the be all and end all of information displays.
If you read 'the Making of 2001' it explains the displays don't really have to be there at all as the computers are more or less controlling the ships systems. They are more there to instil confidence in the pilot that the computers are working and are on the pilots side. (Although that all changed on the way to Jupiter
