First off, this isn't about Odyssey as a game and what we know or don't, mechanics, etc. This is specifically about the lack of VR incorporation due to a perception I suspect may have played a major hand in it.
I have been playing ED for ~2 years now with around ~3k hours in. I have my criticisms but, in all reality, this is one of my top 2 favorite games I have played so far in my life. ED does so much, so incredibly right, that I really can't understate how great it is overall. There are few things that whisk me away from regular life like tossing on my head tracking and gripping my joysticks as I boost off into the black. The stellar sound quality and attention to detail combined with head tracking really takes the immersion to another level and, for someone who has always wanted to be a pilot, it is a dream come true. The whole time I have been playing ED, I have dreamt of how #%@^ing nuts it is going to be in VR when I can get around to justifying the cost. I guess I could say that I envision my entrance to VR ED being an entirely new phase of ED for me, and just that vision is as exciting as playing the game! I am no explorer, but I purchased a second account and ground out the engineers just to have my perfect exploration ship, which I just finished recently after something like 80 hours of dedicated grind. Why would I do this when I don't care for exploring? Because I see exploring being breathtaking in VR. I literally purchased and ground out an account purely to prepare for VR in the future. The account sits collecting dust, waiting for the glorious day I have VR.
I say this because while I am sure the percentage of CMDRs that fly in VR is low, making it look like VR matters to a slim minority of users, I suspect several times over are in the same bucket as me. Dreaming of the day when I can transition into VR. VR for many CMDRs isn't a current reality, but it is a dream we cherish and look forward to materializing. I know that expecting VR implementation for dirt legs at launch is simply not reality, no worries, but I really hope FD doesn't look at the number of current VR CMDRs and think that that is even 1/4 of the CMDRs whom VR implementation matters to. I honestly have zero interest in a first person ED expansion. The reasons why don't matter, this isn't a moan about Odyssey. Despite that, the truth is, if I could walk out of my ship in VR in nothing but stations, I would pay $50 for that alone. Like right now, despite not owning VR. Because I will at some point, and the dream of ultimate immersion with my ships is just too tasty! On the other hand, a first person expansion that can't integrate into my ED dreams is simply a waste of SSD space. And that isn't a knock on whatever Odyssey does or does not offer in gameplay. Without VR implementation, it simply does not fit into my ED dreams besides being a regression to the days when I didn't have VR. I would bet my Anaconda I flew out to Hutton to get that a lot of CMDRs feel the same.
TLDR - It's not just VR CMDRs who want VR implementation, it is also the larger portion of CMDRs who don't have VR yet, but look forward to flying in VR.
