Dear FDevs, how hard it could be to use a different file to store Keybindings between Horizons and Odyssey?

I have to pick my binding file each time i switch from Horizons to Odyssey, 'cause both games uses the same StartPreset.start file.
Could'nt Odyssey uses his own file, so that the control setting are not messed up each time?
Is it really a hard feature to implement?

Thanks.
It may not be really that hard to fix. However, the original plan was for H and O to be merged by now, probably meaning that it would be a non issue like it was with Vanilla and H when H came out. O just turned out to be a lot more problematic a release than H was, also, O and H seem a lot more separate than Vanilla and H were.
A switcher would be nice if they are going to keep them separate for much longer though. I don't play any of the O features, (past an initial look around in a station), but I do play the space ship game in O. Figured I might as well get used to the new UI now. I still think it's garbage compared to H's UI, but it's not as terrible as it was. It is useable at least.

yes its impossible implement it would seem along with a save as function
(cause it would take time to code that in and they cant be bothered)

They do use different files to keep the bindings.
The only fk-up happens with On-Foot bindings that get reset to a default value when switching from Horizons to EDO.
THen i have to go in controls and set my custom bindings, but only for On-foot section.

Or at least that's how it works for me

same as above  (your bindings themselves should not get messed up at all when switching is that your problem ?) @Parduz
The binding files are safe. BUT both game versions writes what file binding are set in the same "StartPreset.start" file. Each version rewrite the setting so that the other one cannot read it. If you save your own binding files instead of using the same in both game versions, you then are forced to go to option/controls each time you switch version.

I don't understand why they can't simply have Horizons read the Odyssey keybinds, use the applicable ones and ignore those that don't apply to it.

I'm still experiencing some disappearance of custom keybinds every time I log on EDO, not even switching to EDH... i.e. the e-motes, I've set them up on some hot-keys. The day after, all the custom hot-keys disappeared. Same happens for other commands (one I use is cycle tool) they all disappear if I change them from the game.

May be I have to try to edit the file BEFORE loading the game?

Most probably, yes

As far as disappearing binds while starting EDO - never happened to me, but i play kb/m and my mouse is always connected to the laptop - heard a lot of complains about bindings getting lost when starting the game without the peripherals already connected (joystick, controller, maybe mouse too)

Thanks! I'll try the manual edit (I play from laptop but using only the mouse connected with a stream deck).

Maybe that's a part of the issue?
No idea, just saying.

I'm using a Corsair Scimitar Elite mouse - and i heavily rely on stuff bound to the 12 lateral buttons. Never had an issue with lost binds in the last 1.5+ years.
Not in Horizons and not in Odyssey.

I don't know, it happens also when Stream Deck is turned off... never experienced loss of custom binds in Horizons, just strange it happens on EDO.

If my issue tracker issue about this had a confirmation for every time there's a thread about this it would be at the voting stage already:

Will vote once I'm back from work! (y)

There is your problem. Only "custom" ever gets overwritten by the game - if you rename your binds file then you will never EVER lose assignments again (plus of course don't keep backups in the same directory - that can stop changes you DO want to make, not being saved).

There is a pinned post at the top of this forum detailing how to rename your files (it is not sufficient to just change the file name).

iv used va hsc to creat seperate binds it created hsc sly binds.03 and hsc sly binds.04 3 for |H and .4 for |O
also with this method updates dont rewrite over my binds as they do when you use custom 03.binds. also all binds had to be present for elite to load the choice in game to be able to select

I play both but only flying. Or should I say every now and then I fly around in Odyssey and realise it's not up to Horizons and go back (frame rates are not a problem for me). Here is hoping it's never merged with Horizons. If I have to select custom in the Horizons controls to keep Horizons I'm more than happy.
