Dear Frontier Developments

I love this game. It has been a blast and I enjoy it throughly. However, two things are really starting to get old and immersion breaking. First, some of the NPC names (actually quite a lot of them) are either ridiculous or derived from popular culture. When Frontier gave us the option to put in a name that will be used for NPC's there should have been a vetting process. I haven't seen anything offensive per se. But, it is far too common to see names that simply aren't names. Can you please go through and remove them and notify the commanders responsible that they need to change their choices. Secondly. I am all for Easter eggs. They can be fun when they are relevant to the back story or paying homage to the previous games. But, stations names like George Lucas. Seriously! Why? and just NO! Did someone run out of creativity on a random Tuesday afternoon or something? Please can we keep these types of pandering out of the game? If you feel like you simply must name things like this. Can it at least be more subtle?

George Lucas was actually named by Frontier, as it is the same station name as it had in Frontier Elite 2 and FFE.

Given that there will be in the region of 100.000 stations (assuming 70.000 inhabited systems), would you care to make a list of suitable names for consideration?

I don't mind the nods to reality & history with the station names, but when I see pirates called Frogglepuss swatter and stuff like that... I just think *ehh*

I didnt realize his name was in previous elite games. So, sorry for that. As far as naming 100,000 station... I kinda feel like the English language is more than adequate to accommodate that without relying on pop culture for "inspiration".

Is it really ridiculous? Theres loads of funny or stupid names of places and people in the world.

This is how names are created. Somebody names something something. And this is exactly what has happened here.

Of course there are. Yet, they have managed to remain obscure in the real world. Where as here, it is quite prevalent.

While I agree with some of the NPC names I'm not so sure about the station names.

I mean George Lucas has had a massive influence on a lot of peoples fantasies of space and it's not a strange thing to have places (and ships) named after famous people.

Eg a couple of United Navy ships.

USS Abraham Lincoln
USS George H.W. Bush
USS George Washington
USNS Alan Shepard

I can concede on the station naming part. Obviously, famous people are famous and we like to remember them. I mean we all know who Plato is 1000s of years after he was alive (even though I doubt that anyone will remember George Lucas for that long). But the NPC names are absurd.

Even in real life, gang members may go by the weirdest of names. Add to that some bribery when obtaining their pilot's license, and it's not that weird anymore.

Err, yeah. Let's see...

Geoff!

Yeah, that's a pretty solid start. I like Geoff. I'll get back to you on the others.

Immersion breaking and popular culture....

Okay, think on it like this. This future world we are enjoying IS our world but over a thousand years hence. Therefore anything you see in game can have references to the contemporary world we currently inhabit. If a Slartibartfast NPC pops up I'm not going to scream "God's no, my immersion!", I'm going to smile because I get the reference.

Sci Fi writers
Sci Fi people in cinema (Gene Roddenberry, Ridley Scott, Stanley Kubrick)
Sci Fi artists like Chris Foss, Giger, Moebius, Druillet... heck, there is a list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_science_fiction_and_fantasy_artists
Renowned scientists: if there is no Stephen Hawking Station, it deserves raising a ticket.
Famous explorers

It takes money to build a space station right, out of reach of the average joe! You only have to look at what ridiculous names the rich and famous call their kids, that soon also filters down to the general populous, ridiculous yes but not breaking news.
