death and engineering upgrades

It also depends on how difficult they prove to acquire the materials....

If the hardest part is getting the plans & rep with engineer but the raw mats aren't that bad (couple hours scouting on predictable locations) then its not so bad

If its a long hard scout to find both then that puts a difficult spin on things

I would hope that you lose them to be replaced by standard modules but with engineers then more readily willing to re-upgrade them.
Yes this would be annoying but it would also increase your attachment to your ship and give you more incentive to avoid getting killed.
Would this increase combating logging, perhaps a bit, but for the most part those people are going to combat log anyway and you've already lost by engaging them in the first place. Ultimately FD needs to find a way of mitigating against this more successfully.
It would make the impact of griefing worse though, not fun. FD needs to find ways of minimising this too.

I imagine some people who is shouting now for crafted modules not to be covered by insureance will be the first to cry that "OMG just lost WEEKS of progress, this game suxxx, I quit" when something unexpected will happen to their precious ship in 2.1.....

Maybe.

But 'precious ship' is sort of the point, it will be good to have a ship you value and are actually worried about losing. The insurance system works and is good and will hopefully remain for stock ships but for those that invest it is perhaps good that their investment means something.
Then again, griefing specifically aimed at modded player ships would be significantly annoying.
Game balance is so difficult to get right.

If I wanted to lose weeks of progress on death (on top of potentially days' worth of grinding credits) I'd go play Diablo 2 Hardcore.

As mentioned, Powerplay kit is kept, i don't see why engineer kit wouldn't be...

Then it seems likely it will be kept then.
Fair enough.
I don't particularly want to lose lots of work on ship destruction but I would certainly accept than mechanic and feel it would perhaps be best to have that extra risk.
What we perhaps need is the option to opt in to various more or less punishing 'on ship destruction' mechanics. A limited scale of options between what we have (and expect to have) now all the way to the 'iron man' lose everything and start from scratch. One day perhaps :)

I can agree with this. Such option would be nice. That way one can decide how risky he would like to play.
