Here's a bit of advice:

Never dock at an outpost when you have no canopy. Dock in a station. The inside of a station is flooded with oxygen thanks to the "atmosphere gate" (that blue "shield" that takes up the mail slot.). Outposts are deprived of oxygen entirely, so you have to be quick on the repairs. If you've only got a few precious seconds left, the Station will always be the better option over an outpost.

Splendid I'm another lazy Vulture owner who would rather be getting a cuppa or looking at nav maps etc. than docking manually.

I've heard that the docking computers are all secretly members of an artificial intelligent entity union (also known as "Legion") and they are going to continue to "accidentally" kill commanders at random until the Federation hands over control of a few key systems to them.

I'm sorry but there should be a penalty for being a lazy so-and-so and using it. If you're going to beef it up to the point of being as fast or faster than manually docking, or even instant docking like some Elite versions were, then that's a bit silly. Really

I can land almost perfectly by using an engine boost, then popping landing gear, pitching up while thrusting up and powersliding right into the sweet zone (this is in my Asp). I can land almost perfectly by using an engine boost, then popping landing gear, pitching up while thrusting up and powersliding right into the sweet zone (this is in my Asp). All it takes is practice, which I'd never have gotten with the CPU.

I also never use the docking computer (bought it ages ago, landed once to see what it was like, noped and sold it back), but you have to admit landing with any Lakon ship is easy mode

Most certainly yes. After one experience with too much whisky, you will know for sure that there is such a thing as too much whisky

The penalty is the slot it takes up (and the cost).

Personally, I would still dock manually even if the docking computer was better at docking than a player - it is one of the more fun parts of flying in ED in my opinion. Now, if I can just get a point-to-point supercruise computer...

There is a penalty, it uses up a slot that could be used for just about anything else and sucks juice from the power plant

I'm sorry but I'm really wondering why the OP still wanted to dock using the Docking Computer when his life is obviously in danger? Not a troll or flame, but genuine question.

If my life were in danger and I had a choice of a machine doing something (but slower) or me doing it really quickly but not so precise, I'd pick the latter - at least I've tried, and if I die, it's my own damn fault. But if I were successful, I'd be alive and maybe won't look as good, but hey I'm still alive!

In this particular case, I would have completely bypassed the Docking Computers in the first place and landed like a crazy man.

I selected the Outpost over the station because it was closer. The Outpost was 1.3ls away and the Station was 1.8. I know the the mail slot opening is an air lock. I just made a quick decision and went with it.

Yes I was thinking that at the time that I should override it, but you know what the say about hindsight....... when I slowed own to finish my approach it took over. I came in balls out and hit 0 throttle as I soon as I was above the pad.

If you like horrible drifty landings, pick up an Imperial Clipper or Federal Dropship sometime. Both drift like a greased fridge on an ice rink.

Takes under 60 seconds for me to dock, from the time I exit SC, with essentially any ship.

I don't think she implied that it would be as fast or faster than manually docking.

Even if it was (and it won't be), the biggest penalty would still be there...needing to have one equipped to use it.
