Death is a temporary aberration

I see a lot of commanders referring to their ship being destroyed as death! Or some saying it's murder when some one's ship is destroyed unjustifiably.

However up to now when your ship is destroyed you are automatically ejected in your escape pod and transported to the station you were last at. So no death or murder! Just inconvenience.
What I want to know is how is it going to be when the escape pod is no longer automatic? What happens if you don't make it to the escape pod in time?
Also what will happen if the assailant then, after blowing your ship to smithereens, destroys your escape pod?
I remember in the original Elite you could scoop up the escape pods and sell them as slaves, highly illegal but profitable non the less.
That's all very well for NPCs, but how will they deal with real players who get scooped?
just a few thoughts :p

Unless they end up implementing ironman mode, your escape pod will always be an automatically launched, invincible, instant traveling plot device that whisks you away to your new spaceship moments after the demise of your previous vehicle.

*Gets out his drum*

Its another of the slightly distasteful oddities of persistent online games. I know in principle it might not be that different from reloading a save but somehow because its a canonical part of the game it feels cheap.
