Death = loss of all cargo?

When you die, you have the option to buy back your (old) ship, and weapons etc and a vastly reduced cost.

However, you don't get this option for your cargo?

ie: If you have 100,000CR of cargo, and you get destroyed, are you 100,000CR out of pocket?

correct

So what happens to the Cargo?, assume you were destroyed by a NPC.

does it stay there?, waiting to be picked up by either you or an NPC?, or someone else (if online).

I think it has a time limit.

Might we be seeing "has anyone seen my cargo?", messages soon ? ;)

unless of course it just goes down with the ship, which would be a shame.

I think up to 20 cannisters survive - the rest goes down with the ship (as opposed to opening up someones cargo hold which streams out much more).

Once in space there is a degradation timer.

Part of these mechanics are to stop the build up of huge numbers of frame rate eating cannisters around stations, without impinging on actual gameplay piracy (and reward pirates for not blowing up the ship).

Depending on how it's priced.

The thing is, one piece of bad luck could be catastrophic given how much can be invested in cargo.

Surely a 25%-50% purchase back price (insurance) would be OK.

So if you have 100,000 credits of cargo, and get destroyed. You'd need to pay 25.000-50,000 to get it back. And you can only do this if you purchase you old ship back.

That said, is the total loss down to a game balance issue? ie: If I get blown up, could someone then pick up my 100,000 of cargo? So if my insurance buys it back there's an abuse possibilty there?

Unless the penalties are very severe, I think so:

I undock. You shoot my cargo bay doors out, and then blow up my ship. You make 100k.

2 minutes later, you undock. I shoot your cargo bay, and then blow up your ship. After paying 25k cargo and 15k ship insurance we are both 60k up. Repeat... :D

Aye ... we are already well enough off with getting our ship replaced at a fraction of its costs

yup

This game is all about risk / reward and with no risks its kind of pointless, as you say its already too easy that you can get the ship back for next to nothing, I think this might be changed in full release hopefully.

I personally would prefer no cargo insurance as that's part of the risk. And yes I have previously misjudged that risk about half a dozen times so far, but that's my own fault.
