Debug camera - give us the pro-photographer version!

So, the Debug Camera is awesome. We've seen some great photos form the Elite: Dangerous universe, however, as a photographer, I can't help but feel that I'd love to see it... Upgraded.

Upgraded with focus, much(MUCH MUCH MUCH!!!) more zoom, perhaps even shutter speed, blur, and, well, anything else a full featured DSLR/mirrorless "semi-pro" grade camera may offer.

At the moment, it's like having a single lens, with a tiny aperture that insures everything is in focus, but said additions would result in some incredible images - sure, if you want to spend a few hours in photoshop, you'd probably be able to get some of the effects going, but it would be so awesome to get them in game off the bat.

Now, I hate to harp on about Forza, as I find it a great example of how custom skins and, also, photography, are extremely well implemented (as far as a console game goes, anyway).

But here's a (very old) example of mine. Now, imagine your Asp, flying over the rings of Saturn, where that Lotus is your Asp, and the road is the rings, giving the impression of speed...

The next pic is a real pic, but demonstrates the use of aperture to focus on a subject, and blur the background, along with the fact this was taken on a 100mm lens, which helps to compress the foreground and background.

And an example of something similar from Forza...

Basically, my point is... Think of the potential! I'd love to take a pic of my tiny Asp in front of a gas giant, with the camera zoomed far enough out that the Asp only takes up 2% of the image - or less.

Anyway, I know there are millions of things that need to be dealt with, however... Please consider...

Exactly! There is so much potential in this game for in game "photography"... Would love to see what people could do with even just a few basic tools (just the ability to zoom out further alone!)

I was just about to ask for the same thing. I specially feel the need to be able to change the focal distance. Screenshots in Elite could be classified as "landscape photography", so having something like a 50mm like it is right now doesn't make much sense. A 24mm @FF would be so much better :)

I'd like to see the focal length variable - there are some great shots I have in mind, that with a "long" focal length, would look awesome. Same with something wide - like 24mm, or even 16mm...

I wouldn't mind seeing the camera controls decoupled from the flight controls, with the flight controls remaining disabled during camera usage as they are now. The way my flight is mapped, there are things I can't really do with the camera unless I undock.

At any rate, I'll go ahead and add my support for additional camera features so we can take even more impressive shots.

I'd like to be able to record game data, and be able to replay it outside of the game. This would allow us to replay a fight and watch it from other angles, or set up movie scenes to record for videos. It would also allow an easy way to get that "perfect" screenshot.

I'm certainly a fan of the debug camera mode and would like to see improvements to it. For a start, I would like it if we can take it much further than we can at present, as I enjoy exploring structures and getting shots which are otherwise tricky to focus on. Perhaps an option that can lock onto an object and then move to that point so that the camera can focus on it. Anyway, I have a lot of art at my deviantART page which I generated in this way. As for recording game video and still images, I use a program called Beepa Fraps for that.

I have a few ideas for short movies, if only I could go back and replay recorded sessions from different angles. As it is now, all we can do is record real-time as it's happening and hope we get the movement and framing right. Aside from stuff like this sample, there's not much else that can be done.

Just a quick addition, but I also love looking around the cockpit of the craft I'm flying and would like to see an option for switching the camera either inside or outside of the craft so it would be possible to zoom in on and look at instruments, displays, etc.

The camera definitely needs some upgrades. I'm glad we just have one available at the moment, but some more options would be nice in the future whenever FD has the resources to look into it (which I'm sure they are looking into it).
