Decided to give the Viper MK IV another chance...

And I'm pleasantly surprised.

I'm using Class 1 turreted beams, and Class 2 Fixed beams (underneath).

Now, I know the pitch of this craft is so so but with proper throttle control and turrets it handles pretty well.
With proper power management you can use 2 Class A shield boosters, so this thing is really quite a powerhouse.
And with the setup I can get around 220 cruising speed in my combat mode, (2.5 pips shields, 2.5 pips weapons, 1 pip engines)
about 298 cruising speed on 4 pips eng. and over 350 boost I think.

I've taken out a few "dangerous" NPC Annies with it also, so I'm actually pretty happy.

Has anyone else given the Viper MK IV a second chance and been happy with the outcome?

Regards,

I've got a Viper loaded up with HRPs which is pretty sturdy. It pitches a bit slow but otherwise handles similarly to a pre-buff FDL and the Viper Mk 3. I'm currently putting together an exploration setup for it since it has similar internals to a Diamondback Explorer. Less range per jump but you can boost it's max range to being similar to both the DBX and the ASPX. What it has over the DBX is much better planetary handling. It's pitch is low but it's handling is better, as is it's lateral thrusters.

Viper Mk IV exploration concept.

Alternatively, more Laden range, but less Total Range. You need to manage fuel carefully, since it has a total of 3 jumps:

That's actually a really good point. I hope it will be as comprehensive as using all possible "manpower" to majorly tweak one aspect like the agility or handling of a craft. This would really level the playing field. I think the gaps between ships would almost be eliminated. Imagine the possibilities.

I had mine setup for ground strike missions with twin beams and twin dumb missiles.
Quite good but too sluggish and slow for my liking.

My preferred bounty hunter build is a Viper Mk4, and I quite like her as she's pretty sturdy in this form. I normally break away from combat at 70% hull, and I never feel as if I am on my last legs when I do so.

I like the Viper mkIV. I gave it an iron behind and used it for fighting in conflict zones. It is a joy to fly when you use FAoff during turns.

However it takes quite some time to nibble down the reinforced hulls of the enemy ships in a conflict zone.
For this task the Vulture would probably be better, I asume?

I recently bought a Viper Mk 4 too.
I have spent a lot of hours in the Mk 3 and it was my first time in this new variant.
The only reason I bought it being that it is a beautiful looking machine. One of the coolest looking ships in the game.
With the Black Friday skin it looks like a Black Ops Stealth vessel. Truly marvelous.

I think it is a good combat vessel for it's size.
I took out all kinds of big ships with it, like Pythons, Clippers and Anacondas, and I had no trouble staying on their tail.
I am wary using it against FAS though. The FAS AI is nasty :).

Although it is a nice ship I still think I will not be using it much. I have outgrown it.
I can kill Anacondas and Pythons and FAS much faster in my Viper, FDL and Python.

That's my issue with it too. I really like it as a ship, but with the options I have now, there's not much drawing me back to the Viper IV. I go back to the Viper III for speed, the Eagle and Sidewinder for handling, the Viper IV for...?

It's a great ship though.

I think the Viper Mk.IV is fairly useful as a small Salvage Ship, Courier, Smuggler or for Planetary Landings.

In its advertised role of "heavy fighter" I always found it lacks a combination of
- agility
- firepower
- a better Power Distributor

It's heavy - but not much of a fighter in its current, sad state. Luckily there's other uses for its few qualities.
